A router only helps with inbound traffic to your LAN. A firewall such as Zone Alarm monitors both inbound and outbound traffic from your computer.

which if you read my post is exactly what i said, as a software firewall can allow only specified programs internet access and block all others. but even then all you need is the WinXP firewall, there is absolutly no need to download zone alarm or any other third party program

I'm running 98SE so I don't think I can download the XP firewall.

I really want to protect what is on this comp,so I have locked up/down? things like Adobe and Windows media and Realplayer and I like being notified if I want to open them. I don't bother with a lot of stuff on the net so it is cool.
As soon as the next final operating system comes out I might buy a high falooting computer and enjoy some of the things I am missing out on (or buy a Mac) but having lost a lot of work before I don't really want to tamper with it anymore.
The occurrences of viruses and stuff is really down lately ,is it not ?

Those two statements are mutually exclusive. If you're really concerned about your computer's security, upgrade to XP SP2 or wait a few months for Vista.

well if he's still running Win98 then he really doesn't have that much to worry about. i don't think any malicous programmers are going to devote the time to writing a virus for an obsolete OS that hardly anyone uses anymore. it's the same reason why there aren't a lot of Mac viruses, there just isn't a big enough userbase to target

Avast is awesome, much better than AVG.

The best thing would be a regular backup regime. Hard drives just die, and I think that is a bigger threat than most anything. That is assuming by protect, you don't mean the data is highly sensitive, and must keep it away from prying eyes. Then you might want to invest in some new equipment.

A good free anti-virus program is Antivir. It's surpassed AVG and Avast in reliability.

I have been running ist even since it came out. No problems for me
