I got sucked into watching a bit of Prime time Sports on Friday and they were talking about the A's and 49'ers setting up in the burbs and if it's the future of pro sports etc. Now that panel of morons couldn't get their heads around the Leafs and the NHL, and being down town. Than they got talking about maybe a small town would be a sucker to put up money for a stadium to get themselves on the map. Than they got talking about will corporate support go to St.Catherines and a bunch of stupid junk. IMO they couldn't think of a situation outside of Toronto type of thing, and figured that you're looking at 40 home games on week nights.
Now in terms of the 49'ers you're talking 10-11 games a year that get played weekly as a maximum for your main tennant in the stadium, and most of those being on a Sunday. So I think you can build that stadium anywhere and still get fans and corporate support. An NFL team is that much of an attraction.
As far as the A's are concerned it's tough to say exactly how this will do. Certainly people in Freemont and San Jose and surrounding area have good incomes and likley make up the type of demographic they'd like to market to. I guess it will depend on if the people that live in these places work close enough to home to attend the stadium for 81 games a year, and if some of these companies in the Silicone valley like Xerox, Cisco etc buy up the seats as corporate support. Certainly PacBell park itself is an attraction and has helped the Giants, but for the most part it's still in San Fran. This will be interesting to see how it works for baseball.
