100 bucks and it takes two hours? No thanks.
It doesn't seem to make sense as it barely reduces the time that it takes to get to Edmonton and as someone already mentioned you then have to get around the city while there.

I'd love it, but for $100.00 it's cheaper for me to get there and back in my SUV. Lame...
labour day long weekend it took me 2:15 each way.
I love the idea. Although if they did it they should expand it right up to Athabasca, it would be a huge benifit to any oil projects up north.

There is no way this is feasible. The amount of time it would take to break even would surpass the life of the rail line itself. There isn't that many people that would require this service at the present. I only see businessmen and the occasional person/family going on vacation or visiting relatives. A lot of the traffic on Hwy 2 is commercial, not just famlies.
Way too many problems to worry about. If I recall, crossings aren't allowed on high speed train corridors. They have to be overpasses or tunnels. It would divide up a lot of land and roads.
Why use electricity when it's expensive here? Why not use a turbine locomotive that wouldn't require overhead wires and high voltage/current down the entire length. That would save a lot of money.
I don't get what the article is saying. They say we can use the existing CP corridor or build new electric tracks. huh? New tracks would have to be built anyways, as the existing CP line wouldn't handle more than a freight train. Heck, in some places it can't even handle a freight train going max speed, so they have to slow down.

would be kool to bounce up to e town in less then an hour on a friday night, but for a 100 bucks a pop i dont see it happening. at 2 hours like it says above, pointles. now a high speed train to banff would be nice. seeing how its a tourist hot spot, ski central and most tourists land in calgary and bus it to banff anyways. makes more sense then edmonton

Creaky oldtimers on the board will remember the Edmonton/Calgary "Dayliner," a one or two car self-locomotive passenger train that would stop at small town stations for passengers heading to either city.
I think it shut down in the late 1970's or early 1980's.

I think it's a good idea because gas is ridiculously expensive. But you'd have to think that the producers would object.

Edmonton can be a fun change from the night life in Calgary. It's actually pretty fun up there sometimes. If you have friends up in EDM it can be fun to go visit them quickly.
Heck you could even go get bombed and if you strike out just hop on the train and come home at the end of the night. Povided it was still running. Have a little nap, get home in no time..
Flames/Oilers game would be a blast if they had cheap night on the C-E TRAIN. Same with *shudder* CFL games.. for those who'd be into that sorta thing.

Going up for a Battle of Alberta would be good... but $100 a person just to go drinking in another city? Takes away part of the fun of road trips.

Yeah, all my banter was based on the hope of a substatially cheaper ticket.
Even if the reg. fares aren't cheaper, they could have Flames night, Oilers night, CFL night.
As well you could probably drink on the train. Sothat cutsa down on your Pre-game time, if you're going to a game or bar.
Haha imagine doing well one night "hey, wanna come back to my place...... in Calgary"

trains sound like a great idea but when governments get involved it gets expensive.
here in prince george, bc, the train cost $140 to vancouver, one-way, in 1999 (the last time i bothered to check).
for perspective that is more than a westjet return. in fact i've done short-notice $59 one-way flights before - well, $59 before airport tax and (gasp) pst.
funny thing, that bcr thing couldn't make any money unless the bc government omitted the interest on its debt from its balance sheet. did they think no one in the province took business ed in grade 10???
if farmers would give in and sell land for cheap, maybe it could be done.
quite frankly with all the traffic across the highway at least huge sections of the rail line would have to be raised.
i say we tunnel under the ground, chunnel-style! after all, those farmers and ranchers only own the top six inches of top soil!

It is only marginally worth it if you go by yourself.
Get four people together, and your costs for gas are less than $15 per person round trip, and it only takes about 45 minutes longer to get there.
Hell, for $150, you can fly and take only 45 minutes.

I'm totally in favour of this idea. This is something big time cities, especially in europe, seem to be doing. Who wouldn't want to be able to head up to deadmonton to see the Flames pound the oilers, then come back the same night? There is so much business and commerce between the 2 cities, we definetly need something like this.

I'm sorry, but that makes no sense to me.
Assuming you already have a car, it would cost much less, given current gas prices, to drive to Edmonton round-trip. As well, there's alternatives in place (eg Greyhound, Red Arrow) that cost much less than the train would...unless that hour you save each way is much more valuable to you.
I also fail to see how the producers would object. I doubt that a super-highspeed train would put even a dent in their profits, seeing how most of the oil produced goes south of the border. As well, I'd be willing to bet you'd still see a good amount of traffic on Highway 2 between the two cities, as people love to be able to drive around the cities they're visiting.

There are alot of business people commuting back and forth. They want to get here quickly and efficiently, and I doubt that Greyhound is their preferred choice; they would much rather get to their destination without the hassle of cramped seats, and other downsides to bus transit. Saving an hour makes a huge difference for most people on the go.
Of course one has to consider if it's just a novelty factor; after all our region is very much unlike Japan, where bullet trains are common within the dense confines of tens of millions of people. Would it make sense to have the same thing here?
It would be connecting the two major centres in Western Canada, in fact it reminds of the Chunnel connecting London and Paris. The only problem I have is that the study said it would bring in a surplus of $669 million but thats an estimation of a span of 30 years taking into account operating and service costs.
