Anyone tried Speargrass golf course about 30 minutes SE of the city?

Another British style golf course that is challenging (Championship course) and is well worth the price. It may be fairly new as well since they haven't completed the clubhouse yet.

The golf courses in SJ arent THAT good..the ones in Monterey (aka Pebble) are MUCH better...Im sure Calgary's compare to SJ.

SilverTip is amazing.

I've been there once, and I probably won't return for a while...but that wasn't because it was a bad course, I just lots too many damn balls to afford going back!

I've definitely never played on anything like it before. Nothing like a 5 minute drive on the cart between holes....pretty cool.

My top five in no particular order would be the following:
Heritage Point
Priddis
GlenEagles
Stewart Creek
Kannaskis

Also, if driving, cost and time is not a problem your hubby should consider the Banff Springs. It is a Stanley Thompson( arguably Canada's Donald Ross) design and is consistently ranked as one of the best golf courses in Canada. The only complaint I have with the Springs is that sometimes it is in less than steller shape.

I'm thinking that I agree with those that say if you really want a unique golf experience in Calgary you go out to Canmore/Banff/Kananaskis. However GlenEagles has some wow views as well. There is one hole there(a par three) on the front nine that is WOW. Standing looking down at the river and the mountains in the background with a shot that either lands on the green, in the huge bunker or goes on down to that aforementioned river LOL.

Banff Springs has a hole like that --used to be I think number eight on the front nine before they changed the layout. Elevated tee across a pond to a small green -- Very nice.

I had the cash and the time I wouldn't be playing any course in the city limits!!!

I didn't like Silvertip because it's not a walkable course. It just seemed to resort-like, as opposed to the courses at Kananaskis and Stewart Creek.

Also try Springbank Links in the NW.

Another great cheap semi-private one is Lynx Ridge. I think a round would work out to about $80 there cart included and they have some really scenic holes.

But it all depends on what he wants to spend and his level of golf experience. If he's a weekend hacker he may not have fun at some of the longer courses listed here. You can spend anywhere between $50 and $200 on a round of golf depending on the course chosen. More information on what he's looking for would make recommendations easier.

Having walked Springbank myself many times, I would hardly say that Springbank front 9 is walkable, but unlink many in Calgary, I enjoy Springbank - price is good and it is easy to get onto. Tough course that beginners should stay away from (wait until you can break 90 consistantly from the back tees before giving Springbank a shot)

My top 5 Calgary Courses (that I have played)

1. Silvertip - no better scenery and a tough course
2. Stewart Creek - great scenery and a playable mountain course
3. Country Hills - Links course (Private) - best greens in Calgary
4. Heritage Point - Desert/Heritage - tough course, great greens
5. Kananaskis - Mt. Kidd - greens can be inconsistant, but best bang for your buck

Good point-I have walked Springbank as well, and that walk from the 7th tee to the fairway has had me out of breath for minutes, and I'm pretty fit. The course does have some nice, unique holes, and I like how the front and back nines are so different from each other.

I would have to say one of my favourite new courses is Sirocco. It is tough as hell though. Fairly long and REALLY tight. I find I don't use my driver there that much smply because it is so narrow. It is new so they still don't have a nice clubhouse and the course could be a bit more mature. But overall it is a great course. Fairly reasonably priced for Calgary (which means expensive)

Heritage Pointe is great but pricey.
Redwood Meadows is incredible. They have the nicest Par 3's in the province.
Kananaskis, Silver Tip and Stewart Creek are all courses you should try to play at least once.
Speargrass is a good course for a decent price.

As far as Private courses go if you have the chance to play Carnmoney it is a great course, The Calgary G&CC is fantastic but unless you know a member pretty much impossible to get on, same with Willow park but again a great track.

There are lots of good suggestions in this thread. Calgary golf is expensive but we do have some pretty good courses within an hours drive.

It's been a while since I have been back in cow-town but heritage point, and country hills hold good memories for me.

Just outside of town: Pheasent Back? I think that this was the name and Wolf Creek. I could be wrong on both of these since the names escape me after so many years but if someone could back me up...

Oh yeah and Fox Hollow is bad for getting pelted with the off target shots of other duffers.

And if budget is a concern I think that Shaganappi (spelling?) is one of the bes municipal run courses.

Or just come out to the island and play in December...

Best Calgary Municipal course is Maple Ridge - greens are in the best shape of the three 18 hole courses.
