the thread showing what Calgary's skyline will look like in 5-10 years pretty much sums up why head offices in your city is a good thing

Quality matters.

How's that confusing? Calgary (& Edmonton) are both dead in the winter. It's not as if tourists are flocking into Calgary from October - April. Calgary is nothing but a gateway to the rockies. Edmonton has WEM, but neither city is a big player.

I don't see the big deal of Edmonton adveritising their city strengths.

This thread just reeks inferiority complex.
I'll certainly give you that the Edmonton Fringe Festival is a bigger event than any of the other Fringes that have popped up recently. I've heard it's quite good, but frankly festivals aren't my thing, much like bingo or country music isn't either. And unlike fleudian, I'll grant that Edmonton has its share of fine looking women - I've spent lots of time around Garneau in the spring / summer time frame.

If you read my post, I'm not saying Calgary's culture is better. Compared to Toronto or Vancouver, both of us aren't even close. There's no point arguing as to the extent or existence of Edmonton's "culture" - we'll just disagree.

What I was pointing out is the constant jumping and shouting of "Hey! Over here! Look! I'm here. I'm cultured!" you get from Edmonton directed at other parts of Canada. Most cities do that to generate tourism from parts overseas but its not as common to do that interprovincially.

So why do things like drop $450,000 on a "Hey, look at me!" campaign? I dunno, you brought up the inferiority complex... Why not just say to the rest of Canada - screw you, we think we're fine despite what you think of us - and go about business without the $450,000 lipstick and mascara makeovers? You are what you are, run with it.

He's half right. For some dumb reason, they still have the "Host of the 88 Olympics" sign on the west entrance to the city... well, at least where the West entrance was ten years ago.

For whatever reason, that cool Heart of the New West sign was only put up on the east entrance. Not sure why they didnt set one of those up at all four major accesses.

Inferiority complex? I was correcting you. Every single big city has every festival you mentioned. Your the one who said Edmontons festivals are better. I guess you've been to every taste of (insert city) in the country.

I find it funny you value street performers more than having big corporate head offices in your city.

What ever makes you feel better... Edmonton is the ONLY city with street performers.

Reggie summed it up perfectly.

I mentioned they are the best in the province. That's a fact.

Meh. Numerous festivals make a difference in MY life. I experience these events, enjoy them. How does having a corporate head office make a difference in your life? More rude/disrespectful/self-centered people? Bragging rights on an internet message board?

Reggie summed up jack. Different people, different opinions.

Edmonton: "No wait... You misunderstand us. We're really not that bad. Believe us. Please."

Calgary: "Howdy! We're hiring!"

Edmonton just wasted $450,000 on a campaign. They should have consulted you. You're a lot cheaper.

Skiing

I live in Edmonton... in the summer, there are some nice festivals - not bad if you're a local. Otherwise, there's really nothing here.

Just browsed through your comments on the Oilers board on HF

Yup, I really liked Heritage Days. Never said anything bad about it.

Just not something that would bring people into the city.

Well if the best event in Alberta according to you, wouldn't bring people into the city, then nothing in Alberta should (other than the Rockies)

You said it right there. The rockies. Brings in a country's worth of tourists a year.

Nobody's gonna go to Edmonton to see a festival. Even though I liked HD more then the Stampede, the Stampede is the only even that is able to bring in touriests.

You are trolling a Calgary message board trying to convince us Edmonton is better? Good luck. Our minds are made up whether we've experienced Edmonton or not.

You sound like the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce or one of the Eskimos male cheerleaders (that is gay).

I've lived in both cities. I grew up north of Edmonton and had no illusions when I was a kid that Edmonton=Sh**burg. That's obviously my opinion and not yours.

If you think that some festival du jour defines a city then knock yourself out. What's culture? I don't have any shortage of entertainment options in Cowtown.

personally, I think what you can do day-to-day in a city is much more important than the few special events that come only every once in a while.
but that's just me.

You can have your deep, cultural fufillment you experience waiting a hour for a stanky port-a-john at an outdoor festival. Or be enthralled by some fruitcake on stage juggling dildoes and whining about his dad thank you very much.

Not an event, but WEM draws the most tourists in this province.
Edmonton was the number one tourist city in Alberta according to statscan.Obviously those festivals helped
