From what I've heard, the blast was really small from a nuclear weapon point of view. Any chance that they just created a large conventional blast and used a dirty bomb to create nuclear fallout?

There is a possibility but not that likely, From what I understand the radiation readings from a true nuclear blast are different from the radiation readings that you would get from nuclear material blasted with conventional explosives.

The first test firing of a nuclear weapn under the manhatten project was relatively small. When you test fire your proving theory and your explosives package firings, you don't care about the size of it.

Once you build a working concept, its easy to make bigger bombs following the receipe
