For the guys interested in getting a team together next year I would be all for it. Someone should remember to start a thread mid summer next year so we can get it organized on time.
So it is too late for this year?

It's pretty hard to get a team into a league in this city. There is too much demand for too little available ice time. If you're thinking about next season, you should get a committed roster together and get your name on their "wait list" asap.

Winter leagues with "Beginner" level teams:
- Hockey North America (HNA): http://www.calgaryhna.homestead.com/
- Non Contact Hockey League (NCHL): http://www.nchl-calgary.com/
- Alberta Rockies Centennial Hockey League: http://www.archl.com/

Other winter leagues:
- Calgary Mens Hockey Association (CMHA): http://www.cmhahockey.com/
- AllCal Hockey League: http://www.allcalhockey.com/
- Southern Alberta Senior Men's Hockey League (SASM): http://www.sasmhockey.com/
- Western Recreational Adult Hockey League (WRAHL): http://www.wrahl.com/

A new small league:
- South Calgary Hockey League: http://www.carha.ca/

Another one I've heard of but know nothing about:
- Calgary Adult Hockey League: http://www.cahl.ca/

The best (as in high caliber) adult league in the city:
- Heritage Hockey League: http://www.heritagehockeyleague.com/

A few summer leagues:
- Alberta Summer Hockey League: http://www.albertasummerhockey.com/
- Centennial Hockey League: http://www.centennialarenas.com/
- Non Contact Hockey League (NCHL): http://www.nchl-calgary.com/ (Repeat of winter league above)

You can get a feel for just how many adult rec teams there are in this city by clicking on the "Teams" link on most of the above sites. The result being that you'll never find good ice times (before 10:00pm) in Calgary, as first dibs go to minor hockey, and then the leagues compete with long-time shinny ice time holders.

If I missed any other (public) leagues, please let me know!

I play in HNA and I love it so far. I just started this year and I think I know exactly what ref you are talking about, he is a joke. I play on the Eagles in div. 4 we havent had too many blow out games.

Great thread and great info. I'm also beginer in hockey, can skate ok but have to shake the rust off each year.
Maybe some people aren't even talking about league here but just getting together on some public site and having a pick up game?
Don't know but I'm going to subscribe to this thread.

I've played in all 3 Leagues, HNA, NCHL, and the WRAHL. I found HNA to be a bit of a joke, most the refing and the stuff that you can get away with in the league tends to provoke more goons into doing what they do.

NCHL is a good league, not a big fan of the penalty shot rule though, and to me the WRAHL is the best of the 3, well organized, great refs, and good ice times.

I play in HNA too, it would be awesome though if we could get a CP team going in one of these leagues.

oh yeah, Garnett's a little bit of a headcase, he LOVES giving 10 minute misconducts for having your visor too far up or your helmet on wrong. makes him feel real important.

Our game got called in the first period last night because our captain had the tiniest crack in the top corner of his visor (all screws were still present, and it had no effect what so ever on the effectiveness of his visor). He got booted for the visor, found one in the lost and found, came back, Garnett looked ****ed because he was pretty smug he thought he'd sent the guy home, told him he had a 10 minute misconduct to serve. We only had 6 guys, and he immediately gave out conicidentals for roughing, so the game was called because we had 2 guys in the box and couldn't play 5 on 5.

Hmm.. I wonder why he wanted to leave an 11pm Sunday night game early?

Reaper and I both play for the Demons. I am happy that I don't have to deal with Mr. Referee this year. So far the refs in the NCHL have been really good, they've called some really fair games and we haven't had any problems as of yet.

Do you guys play in division E? I think we played you a few games ago. The only problem we've had so far is with the Outlaws nightclub team. They are mostly bouncers, and were ganging up on one player on our team and throwing out racial slurs at him (he's asian). Their whole team seems like they're on riddlin, but what would you expect from a bunch of bouncers, lol.

Also consider ball hockey as another viable option, I played in the summer superleagues and it was a blast and its a great workout too.
