(I'm allergic) Once the dog got used to the cat, (the cat liked the dog right from the begginning) they were great buds. Every morning they would greet eachother with a touch of the nose.
Given proper introductions and some time to get used to each other, there's no reason cats and dogs can't get along . . . . . our dogs will tree a stray cat out of curiousity but won't harm it.

A solid straight left from the neighbour cat catches Keeper on the chin . . .

They were best friends and just kidding around. This cat would ambush the dogs out in the field, leaping out of the tall grass at them when they walked by . . . . . the cat was run over by its owners a couple of years ago. Mostly, though, it seemed to live at our place.

This cat moved in to our backyard, and has really bonded with our chocolate lab. Funny though, she won't let any other cats hang out in our yard!

I just had to add to this post, couldn't help myself. I have a 13.5 year old black lab, and you couldn't have asked for a better dog in the world. My mom had known the breeder and on my 10th birthday the litter was born. We got to visit every weekend, which I know was just an added bonus. But I think even though it's more expensive I'd definately go through a breeder. Get some better bloodlines. Unfortunately my dog is nearing the end of her life, her hearing, and sight is leaving, and her hips are giving out on her, but she has never once had her temperment change. Has always been the most loveable, caring dog around. You will in my opinion be getting the best breed of dog out there. I also fully agree with White Doors about the book Marley and Me. It was a well written book, and a tear jerker. Good luck with your dog search, and I hope you get a dog as great as mine is. They truly are not just a dog, they are family.

http://www.arf.ab.ca This is a great website for adopting pets. My sister bought a cat from here and it's for a great cause.

I had a yellow lab til he had to be put down of cancer and Im going to get a new doggy soon. Ive found that the breeders charge a lot, but like you, I dont trust some of those pet stores. I think the best option is to go to animal rescue groups (not sure if you hvae em in Canada)...what they do is pull them from the shelter right before theri time is up and they are scheduled to be euthanized, and then they give them their shots, get them microchipped and place them in a canine foster home. They show them at adoption fairs, and then people get to bring em home. If it wasnt for these rescue groups, a lot of these doggies would get put down for no reason! I foster doggies sometimes and its rewarding. It's very common here in California, but Im not sure if you have them there. Look for the animal rescue groups.
