Not a big fan of the "area play" (I knew what the play was, didn't know what it was called). If they can't touch the bag, then it isn't an out. It means the guy running from first has done his job.

I grew up and live in Saskatchewan. It's winter at least 6 months of the year here. Growing up, to me hockey was a passion. Baseball was a hobby to be played in May and June.

But the runner is allowed, to a reasonable extent, go out of his way to attack the shortstop/second baseman. It is only fair that the fielders should get some sort of leeway.

I know I've made mincemeat out of some shortstops, and I've been flipped more than once as shortstop. It can get pretty ugly, with spikes up etc.

Baseball is full of fuzzy rules. The area play is the equalizer for the defense so they don't get annihilated by guys taking liberties breaking up two.

Well a large part of Baseball's allure is the tradition and history that the game has. It is the longest established professional sport going. It is basically a leisurely way to pass time. You can sit in the stands enjoy a drink or two, a hot dog, and keep score without too much trouble. Than theres all the stats and percentages and numerical stuff that can make the game much more interesting than it appears on the surface.

Hockey on the other hand is more of an action game, and although it has it's nuances with styles and strategies it moves so quickly that it doesn't allow the drama to develop like a baseball game does.

I love hockey, and take a Flames game any day of the week. But come October I will sit and watch every baseball playoff game I can. Whereas I can't neccessarily do that with any hockey game.

Baseball down here isn't the ONLY sport we have though...it competes for attention with football, basketball, golf, and hockey. In Canada, even though people watch other sports, its just about hockey...thats basically it. Hockey IS better, but if Canada had another NBA team in Western Canada, or another MLB team, I think western canada would get all excited too, right?

Used to be an Albertan, now a California girl!
