I recently bought the trades for Sea of Red - pirates & zombies - can't lose.
Also,
The losers series (Vertigo) and Queen & Country (Oni Press) - some great espianage stuff.
Testament has a biblical undertone, I want to get that trade next.
Hawaiian Dick - 1950's detective story set in the Islands
If you like westerns, go with Jonah Hex - there is a showcase volume (500 pages) in black and white reprinting the old Wierd Western Tales - as well as a trade of the recent revitalization is available next week.
Ennis' Punisher is a ride. I am not a Marvel fan, but Rucka's Wolverine was good.
There is some great independant stuff out there - Last of the Independants, Smoke & Guns, Filler. The Rabbi's Cat, Three Strikes.
TV tie-ins - CSI and '24'
Great Oldies coming back into print - Alien Legion and the Gold Key Star Trek.
Exterminators looked good and I was thinking about getting it. On your recommendation, I think I will.

What? No Transformers Evolution?
Right now I'm reading whatever comes across my plate via DCP if you know what that is. Talia Al Ghul is back with Batman's son (yes) in the recent Detective Comics, and Superman just got his powers back after Infinite Crisis and 52 weeks. The storyline is a much much much better version of a Superman Returns after being missing for a year than the POS movie ever got close to. After defeating Lex, Superman is also being totally err...umm. *sigh* owned (sad that I can't think of an equivalent in proper English anymore) by some giant alien auctioneer.
Saw a b&w comic called Wasteland which was pretty cool, miss those post-apocalyptic stories that there were so many b&w indie comics published about in the 80s and 90s. Reminds me of the manga Eatman which is possibly my favorite manga of all time. It's about a nomadic cowboy type (aren't they all) in a desertified future after global warming flooded the world or something "Big Wet".
As for Marvel, I'm going through Marvel Civil war, etc. I've really liked the Planet Hulk storyline so far but the whole Spider-Man telling the world that he is Peter Parker thing isn't being handled that well. I really don't like any of the ultimate series, can't stand all the revisions made to condense and simplify the characters.
The one exception that yes, shows I'm kind of a ###### is that I really like reading Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane - which is basically teenage romance/comedy/drama about Peter Parker in highschool. It's character driven insteady of storyline driven which is what is missing in pretty much all Superhero comics where characterization has simply become the result of stupid plot cycles. This is just sort of a Degrassi for Spider-Man where Spidey and Mary Jane are like best friends that talk about their problems but don't know each other well as Peter and Mary Jane.

hey all,
For those interested, I own the North location of Phoenix Comics in town (1010 16th Ave NW, near SAIT or the 16th ave Earls). While I cant give a blanket discount to CPers (for one thing, most of the employees here would have no idea what you are talking about, and I'm not in every day). We do have some options for you to get your comics a little cheaper anyway.
First of all, we already reprice all all TPBs and GNs to reflect a more accurate Canadian Cover price. Often this saves you $5-$10 right there.
Second we have our disount card, which cost $10 and gives you 10% off all comics, including GNs and TPBs.
Finally we have our file service, which is for the hard core collector. It gets you 15% off, but has a deposit and minimum monthly order requirements.
For those of you having trouble finding stuff like Sin City or Dark Knight, we have those in stock everyday at both locations... along with pretty much every other inprint trade or GN. We also have approximately infinite manga for those of you looking for a yaoi fix (we wont judge you).

Everyone needs a guilty pleasure.
My shelf also holds The OUtsiders, Teen Titans, & Legion of Superheroes.
I have long boxes with the run of the various Justice Leagues, Hawk & Dove, Atari Force, Solo Avengers, Dragon's Claws, and the '80's Checkmate.
Also, try the Starman trades - that was a cool series. (can't complain about a writer who is a fan of Woody Strode!!)

Yup, we have most Johnny issues, plus the complete TP of the whole series. Same with Squee and Filler Bunny.

Anyone read the Marvels tpb painted by Alex Ross? Has to be one of the most beautiful books ever produced. I bought the limited hardcover edition signed and numbered I loved it so much.

If you like that one, there is a new Kingcome Come Absolute HC now, also by Ross. Its available in a much cheaper trade as well, but the DC Absolutes are really nice.

I thought Kingdom Come also by Ross was better due to the insane ending. Both are great though.
The writer for the Marvels series, Kurt Busiek asked me for my autograph at comic show here a few years back. He bought some comics off me and needed a receipt written on a backing board. hehe.

ehh? Kurt Busiek wanted your autograph? Why would you put a receipt on a backing board.

Kingdom Come was amazing but the sequal "The Kingdom" can be passed over as it's not very good. Basically Marvel Civil War is copying the idea of Kingdom Come.

hehe. That was after he signed thousands of autographs. One guy brought in a whole long box of stuff for him to sign! hehe.
He needed to expense the comics back to Marvel and needed something in writing. Since i didn't bring a cash register with me he said just something written on a backing board with the amount paid and my signature was good enough.
Pretty nice guy and his run of Untold Tales of Spiderman blows Ultimate Spiderman out of the water.

I have a small stack of old comic books from the 1960's and early 1970's which I periodically haul out and enjoy . . . . . the only remnants left from a large box which my father decided to throw into the local sanitary landfill the moment I moved out.
If I were frequenting a comic book store, it would be issues from that era I'd be looking for . . . .

The following comics are my favorite: Tintin, Asterix et Obelix, Calvin and Hobbes
Maybe a different genre?

Those are all great comics too. We carry Tintin and Asterix (which are finally back in print after a number of years of not being widely available). If you like those, I also recommend Bone, which is an awesome series from the 90s with a similar adventure/humor feel.
