From what I've read. Blu-Ray has the potential to be the better technology, but HD-DVD will make it to the market first and be more affordable.
I think HD-DVD will win this one.. but I also haven't kept up to date with any progress on it in the past couple months

Both are on the market right now. I have a feeling that HD-DVD will win this battle. Hopefully early 07 we will see the LG combo player that plays both formats. They ditched strictly Blu-ray to focus on the Dual format player. With no clear winner yet, I won't be running out and buying either. I may go out and buy an upconverting DVD player though.

I saw a HD DVD setup in Best Buy with a HD DVD movie and nice TV, and it looked pretty impressive.
Not $1000 impressive though.
Whichever one gets cracked first will win

I live in the US, but it was on the Continental Airlines rewards site. $363 +100 miles(which are worth about a dollar). No shipping or tax. At least $100 cheaper than anywhere else.

In order for a player like that to be effective, doesn't one have to own a 1080p TV? I don't even have a HDTV of any kind yet, I'm not about to make a massive jump just for DVDs.
Is there any chance in the near future, that a 1080p will be useful for anything BUT DVDs? In other words, is HDTV on TV going to support this?

Not really, the movies on the discs are encoded in 1080p/24fps.. So unless you have a native 1080p TV that supports 24fps (some projectors do), the content will be resampled anyway and going from 1080p/24fps to 1080i/60fps shouldn't look any worse.
Or at least that's what I've read.

I'll wait until the players are < $150. Since the first gen players started at $700, it shouldn't take too long. By then one of the formats will have died out as well so it'll make the decision much easier.

But this isn't just Sony vs Toshiba. It's Microsoft vs Apple. It's Intel vs DELL. It's NEC vs HP.
Blu-Ray is better. Higher bitrate, greater storage (50 Gigs vs 30 Gigs)...
HDDVD is cheaper. They can use the same factories that created DVDs and convert the machines to create HDDVDs, while Blu-Ray is something completely different which need new machines.
VHS won out over Beta even though Beta was better simply because it was cheaper.

That seems hard to believe, do you have something to back that up?
Regardless, I doubt it has much of an impact on this format war. Unlike when VCRs were released, there are many, many outlets to get your porn these days.

HD DVD is testing triple layer 45 gb discs now. Blue ray is testing dual layer 50 gb discs. I believe neither has been released yet, and there is some doubt as to whether these formats will work on the existing players.
Higher bitrate and capacity should not affect the quality of movies though. Both are capable of sending near perfect 1080p video and lossless 7.1 audio. For the current batch of movies, most people agree that the 15 gb HD DVDs deliver a better picture than the 25 gb BluRays due to better compression schemes.

So how much are these new DVD's going to cost? I've never gotten why people are so eager to spend 20-30 bucks to purchase a DVD. There's only a few movies that I would watch more than once or twice. It just seems like a big waste of money to me but obviously a lot don't feel that way.
