Getting financial advice at a bank is the worst thing you can do. They only hawk their own products, and most banks' mutual fund offerings are deplorable.

Yes, that would probably be usual for a bond fund. I was talking about if he bought actual bonds themselves, like a Canada Savings Bond. In that case there would be no reinvestment of interest income.
