I didn't like the movie but this isn't a ripped off idea. Michael Mann, who created the tv series, is the man behind the movie. And having seen a lot of the show I can tell you that the movie is very different.

WHAT?!?!?!? One of the most respected and one of the best reviewed directors is overrated????? Unbelievable, I'm not advocating Miami Vice was his best work, I feel its hit or miss and it was hit with me, but don't bash his other work. Heat, The Insider, Last of the Mohicans. 3 great movies, 3 very different movies.

I knew the Michael Mann supports would be all over this
Miami Vice- Haven’t seen it but like I said the reviews I have read suggest it is just awful
Collateral- I did not like this movie, after all the hype it got it just didn’t stand out to me, Everyone gave Tom Cruise so much credit for his portrayal of the Bad guy, congrats tom every great actor can play more than one role, and as far as Jamie Fox he was better in bait
Ali- For a movie about arguably the greatest athlete of all time, this was a god awful movie
The Insider- Good movie
Heat- Didn’t sees
The Last of the Mohicans- Didn’t see

I just make negative posts about movies and music that I think are crap.
Take Miami Vice for instance.
Straining not to sound elitist, I think alot of people have no clue about film critique. I think that's a shame because movie producers can just keep churning out crap to be happily gobbled up.
Now of course you will say how I am just be subjective and what's good to me is crap to someone else and that's somewhat of a legitimate statement. I don't have to go check out the crappy movies and I don't have to lament about the non-differentiating mass public. What I do have legitimate gripes about is the sincerely lack of quality cinema for me to purvey. When I go to the video store I often leave empty handed because there is practically nothing that is good enough for me to pay to see.
I'll end this on a positive note for everyone reading the thread. If you like ganster and/or cop movies I highly recommend the British movie 'Layer Cake.' Now it still suffers from some typical gangster moments but it creates a very believable tension through the movie. Check it out:

wow.. not trying to disagree with your opinions of his other movies because you are entitled to think whatever you want.
but you just called a director overrated without watching what many feel are his two greatest movies. Thats like calling the whole godfather trilogy crap after just watchign the third one.
Heat was amazing, in my mind one of the best crime movies I've ever seen.

I'm on the fence with Heat. What was so amazing about it?

Layer Cake was a very good movie. I'm with Hakan, the formulaic drivel that Hollywood is pushing out is getting sickening. "You, Me & Dupree"... haven't we seen this movie 3 or 4 times in the last 4 or 5 years?

Style, characters, story.. when I watched Heat it was very different than any crime movie I had seen before it. I really enjoyed it then and if I watched it now I would still enjoy it, in my opinion that is what makes a movie great.

Heat was an amazing movie. The acting by both Deniro and Pacino was brilliant.

yep, it was a pleasure seeing the two Als in the same movie. Kilmer can really act when he wants to, and the shootout scene is awesome.

Probably one of the best robbery scenes ever. That shootout was the coolest thing in the world when I was a teenager (graphic violence, hooray!)

Maybe you need to find a better video store. I too don't care for what Hollywood churns out but I never have a hard time finding great movies to watch...just gotta find a store that has a deep selection and search beyond the new release wall.

I just came back from Miami Vice, and I loved it. I don't think it was the typical action shoot 'em movie. A lot more buildup. I loved the tension. Another great Michael Mann movie.
