I have to recommend this fan as well. It pumps air like crazy and will allow you to cool a room by putting it facing the ceiling in the corner of a room closest to an open window or a bowl of freeze packs (will fit right under the fan drawing air across them). By pointing the fan at the ceiling you create a "cyclone" effect which will keep the air moving in the room quite well.

Sure, the fan costs $80 but it is totally worth it.

This is what I don't get with the mentality here in Calgary. Why spend $80 on a fan, when for $100 you can buy an A/C unit? And I know all sorts of people who say to me "oh, you don't need A/C in Calgary" then go on to talk about buying all sorts of fans.

Can somebody tell me what is wrong with having A/C?

A lot of people get sick from constantly running air conditioning. There's something about the recirculation of air and the constant dehumidification that makes for a good recipe for a head cold.

Also, we use our fan to spread the humidity generated by our humidifier. We have the turbo aire fan on a stand and the tower humidifier fits right underneath it. We run that setup all year round.

We're actually just getting to having central air put in our new house. Got a pretty good quote from Sears Homecentral. Is there anyone else that I should consider that can get this done in a reasonable timeframe (about 2 1/2 weeks)?

I agree, we went to the next step and had central air installed. Man do we love it. It is all about comfort not more fans, no more complaints about hot weather. We use if from May to Sept and it cost about 25-30 a month to run. Same price to pay to be able to sleep I think.

I also think (at least it did) that using fans made me more sick due to the air always blowing off me. Gave me headaches and all.

How much was the quote Ironhorse? And how many sq feet is your house?

(Curious for my own sake.)

My mother in law is getting this done too and Arpis is say about 2-3 weeks as well. You will love the A/C. Once you have it you will never be without it. Kind of like have a car with a/c once you have you cannot go without.

Do you have a two story house. If so I have a few hints for you to keep the upstairs nice and cool.

I have a two story house that has the back facing SW, it's hot. Any tips on cooling a two storey would be very much appreciated

I open all the windows at night letting out the heat and close them in the morning traping the cold in.

Well for starters, most new condos prohibit window mounted AC boxes, as they're pretty damn ugly. That leaves you with the portable ones with hose ducting but they're a lot more than then window mounted ones, probably about 500-800 each.

Finally, when I had my POS Danby A/C I found the electricity bills jumped $40/month just for that stupid thing. Operating costs are murder for A/C.

Don't get me wrong, A/C rocks and I'd do in a heart beat, but at the end of the day it's really more of a cost thing that holds people back.

I actually was talking about Iron horse and A/C. If you have a/c I would suggest closing all the vents that are in rooms you do not use to get more air flow upstairs (as heat raises) and keep your doors closed to keep the cool air in. Works like a charm.

Now if you have two furnaces and two compressors this is not a problem.

Ah the memories. When we came to Calgary 2 years ago we rented a 1 bedroom apartment at The Pointe in Applewood. The place was an absolute furnace. I'm surprised we didn't have to go to the hospital with heat stroke. There was absolutely no breeze in the place. There was only a bedroom window and a patio door and at night we'd have to close them because of the constant noise coming in on the highway at all hours. But even when they were open it made no difference because no air came in. Then winter came..... we did not put the heat on once. We had the thermostat off and we were still sweating, even in the winter we had to have the window and patio door open to try and cool the place off. There's no way I could go back to living like that.

Prototype, I think I live in the exact same complex as you. Here's what I do:

Keep every single window and blind closed tight until the sun starts to set. Once the outside air is cooler than inside, crank your front and back windows, and up with the blinds. I have a ceiling fan in the bedroom at the back, so I turn that on, and I have a tower fan that I put infront of the living room window.

I usually turn off the ceiling fan when I go to bed and leave the tower fan going and both windows open. The tower fan has a thermostat and a timer, I usually set it to 21 degrees and 6 hours. If I leave it on all night its too damn cold in the morning to get out of my toasty warm bed. Usually It's down to 21 by the time I go to bed on hot days and around 19-21 in the morning. Seal everything back up when you wake up, and it shouldn't be more than 24 or at the worst 25 when you get home.

Is anyone on CP a butcher? If so, would it be cool if I came over and hung out in the freezer for a while?

I used to like the heat, but I can't cope with this anymore. I have a headache, and I feel like puking. I really do long for the -10 days right now.
