So Calgary has its own Fred Phelps? Good luck with that.

Hah,
I was sitting in the grandstand watching this thinking to myself:
"Someone's gonna make a big deal out of this."

Turns out I was right.
Anyone want this weeks lottery numbers?

When I see an intolerant fanatic like the Reverend in this story . . . . its always fun to pull him out from under his rock and into the light of day.

And its a dead-ringer to the Pat Robertson threat that God was going to blow up, I think, Pittsburgh for some similar reasoning.

I'm not able to access the article through the link. Could someone provide a detailed summary?
I have some contacts among the professional clergy in Calgary, and I am also interested to know who the anonymous "Reverend" is.
Wrath of God. How can we even define the concept anymore? Without alarmist and propogandist fundamentalists to tell us what is and what is not a result of divine displeasure; such things are not self-evident.

It doesn't seem to be subscriber only, you should be able to get it. Here is a taste:
Quote:
Local minister Gord Smith worries the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Board may have called the wrath of God down upon the city, since it has endorsed pagan spirit worship.
...Descriptions of the ceremony (pouring gin and saying prayers on stage)...

Quote:
Smith, a chaplain at Calgary International Airport, acknowledges the Ghanaians have a right to believe what they want. But he thinks it's "offensive, totally offensive," for the Stampede board to endorse pagan spiritualism.
"They don't know what they're playing with when they consent to spirit worship," said Smith.
"I'm calling all the prayer intercessors I know, to start praying for the city. God's not going to like this."
The article then goes on to speak with someone from a missionary agency whose 'mission groups regularly see "demonic invasions into people's lives" in Africa,'

Then the article gets quotes from 2 people who it names and calls "a Christian"; but doesn't explain why those people are being quoted (because they wanted quotes from more people who disagreed with the ceremony, I guess).

Thanks, I've managed to access the article now:
Quote:
"But our country was built on Judeo-Christian values; that's what's given us its blessings."
Why do people always confuse values with religion? "Judeo-Christian values" just happen to be the same as those cherished by most Muslims, Hindus and humanists with some slight variation. The citation insinuates that Canada is a "Christian" nation, which is most certainly not the case. As far as the Stampede Show is concerned, from my perspective this is a celebration of cultural distinction, and not something for any Christian to be overly concerned about.

I'm not a fan of Christianity but in comparison to tribal beliefs they look like enlightened scientists. The paganism I've come in contact with is full of black medicine used to control their people with fear. There may be good guys too, who for a price, bring relief but you can see where this goes. Nasty, nasty business and yes, I've seen some Christians play similar games.

I went to the Grandstand on the opening Friday and saw the Ghanians in the line for the bathroom and than when they were called up on the stage they were no-shows.

No Jokes.

Text, that was a thing from the Onion, a rather humerous spoof news website.

I like this quote in particular. I'd actually like to know specifically what he means.

As Text will attest to, spirit worship has been taking place long before there was even a Christian Religion - I'm pretty sure we are safe from the "Wrath of God".

Yes, I can attest to that.
Th Old Testament is actually repleat with traditions which probably originated in a pan-theistic spiritist society that emphasized the power of magic.

That show was just...sad. The woman in the picture almost made me ashamed to call my self an evangelical, and completely re-inforced my total disgust for Christian fundamentalism.
Thank God for the emerging church movement...

BTW, did anyone see Reginald Finley (The Infidel Guy) on Wife Swap?

Excuse me for asking, but who is that woman?

She is a charasmatic Christian fundamentalist who was part of one of those reality spouse-swap shows (either ABC's Wife Swap or FOX's Trading Spouses; I cannot remember which one). As is typical with both of these shows, she traded places with a woman who is a professional astrologist, and suffered some unbearable self-induced "spiritual persecution" as a result. Upon her return home, she completely freaked out and began screaming and casting demons that the aforementioned astrologist had infected her home with. It was really disturbing and actually a little frightening; everything that is wrong with both the charismatic movement and Christian fundamentalism all rolled into 60 minutes of television.
