On the otherhand, I heard from a person at work that the Dutch are actually trying to lower their age of consent.

as sad as this is, I have friends that aruge it's morally ok for a 24 yr old to be checking out and dating 14 yr olds because it's legal. They have no concept of "just because it's legal doesn't make it right". Glad to see the age of concent raised, 14 (unless in a position of authority then 18) is just too low IMO. If you have to be 18 with an authority figure, why not 18 for everyone else?

I was going to say that but I couldn't remember exactly what the quote was.
Nice job.

I think the difference has to do with the policy decision to crack down on teacher-student relationships. The same can be said for s. 153.1 "Sexual exploitation of person with disability." In that case there is no reference to age but there is a clear emphasis on being in a position of trust or authority over a person with a disability (who could very well be "like" a young person in maturity levels).

the big thing to worry about (and hopefully there's a provision to protect against this) is the situation that has been known to happen in the US:
Guy is 17, Girl is 14... completely legal, or at least not illegal, since neither are violating the age of consent laws since neither are of age... now, 6 months later, guy is 18, girl is 15... they are sexually active, and they have a nasty break up. Girl alleges statutory rape.
Since they are more than two years apart, in Canada, there would be no legal protection. Clearly he did nothing wrong, and dating someone two or even three or four years younger is not anything perverted or exploitative.
I do think the AoC should be upped to 16... but that should be for anyone over 21, and there must be provisions for any imaginable circumstance that is respectable to the majority of society.

The new law states that people 14 or 15 can have sexual partners that are no more than 5 years older. Therefore I guess a 19 year old could be doin a 14 year old. Still a little freakish but better than what is available now.

It was this possibility for abuse that had this law defeated the first time. Previously a 16 year old could be charged and convicted for having sex with a 15 year old. This law is fine. It says that if the older of two partners is "less than five years older", then they are exempt.

Well no offense, but your friends are sound pretty creepy. Forget all the naughty aspects of a 24 year old guy dating a 14 year old girl, the guy has to have a few serious problems if he can even just hang out with girls that age.
Any grown man that thinks it's alright to date a girl who is in Grade 9 deserves a slap in the face, among other things.

When the Tories introduced this bill back when the Libs were in power, they had a similiar age guarantee. I cannot say for certain if it was the same as this one but it would have protected from this kind of situation, so that arguement doesnt fly. And even if that was the case the Libs could have introduced an amendment to include such a provision. But.... they didn't, they were happy with 40 year olds having sex with 14 year olds.

Isn't it common in India for older men to marry like 12 & 13 year olds?

IIRC the bill was presented by the tories and defeated by the liberals when everybody was jockying for position during the vote of non confidence days. The liberals voted against it not because the didn't like it but for their own parites political agendas.

Nope, India is extremely conservative sexually, and the age of consent there is 18. Interestingly, the age of consent for marriage is 18 for males, 21 for females.

Hmmm...I know there are a couple of middle-eastern countries where this is the custom.
