For me its definitely Star Wars Phantom Menace. The letdown is especially brutal given all the buildup, anticipation, and love of the originals. What a steaming piece of ****e. Episode 2 and 3 are right there with it.

I didn't think another 48 hours was that bad. The rest deserve to be there. And Slap Shot 2 definitely sucked.
dishonourable mentions:
Beverly Hills Cop 3
Blues Brothers 2000
either of the Matrix sequels

I thought Flesh Gordon and the Cosmic Cheerleaders was a bit of a let down.

Matrix 3 was one of the biggest disappointments of my young movie going career. Shook my faith in a blind-love of action movies.

Now THAT was a funny show.
For any of those who have seen it, Adieu Galaxy Express 999 was terrible, which I thought couldn't be topped after Galaxy Express 999 itself.
I'm sure it would have been better on drugs.

Very True. The scene at the end with the guy on the cross and the giant talking face was mind blowingly bad.
Matrix 2 wasn't anything special either.

Yeah Beverley Hills Cop 3 truly is a piece of crap. So it in Esso Plazza at the loonie theatre. Still was a rip off.

I disagree with almost everyone except for a few very intelligent people on this, but I firmly believe that Alien 3 is a far better film than Aliens. For me, Aliens is one of the worst sequels of all time. I'm not saying Alien 3 is brilliant, just much more in keeping with the moods and themes of the original (and with better acting and cinematography) than Aliens.

Home Alone 2 and 3 are quite bad.
Octo, I totally am with you about Aliens. One of the most overrated movies ever. James Cameron is a hack.

I didn't mind 2 Fast 2 Furious 2 much. Not a great movie, but I don't think it is worthy of worst sequel material... now, The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift... that doesn't look good at all.
Star Wars Episode 1... It isn't a sequel so it cannot make the list. Even though it isn't as good as it's "sequels" I still didn't mind it. It was Star Wars and that was good enough for me.

Oooh firm disagree on this.... I totally get your train of thought with respect to mood and tone continuity but to me Aliens was a new chapter being written. Sequels don't have to mirror the original necessarily IMHO. That and it was a kick ass adrenaline ride that constantly had you asking "Oh God, what next...." Ridley Scott himself (to me anyways) followed somewhat of a similar tact in Blackhawk Down.
Alien3 just seemed like a half hearted effort to recreate exactly (from a tone and mood POV) what was done in the original and to me, those are the worst sequels of all (Dumb and Dumberer, Oceans 12, etc)

Put another vote in for the Matrix...sequels. Actually, I've never seen the 3rd one. But I will conclude that it is worse than the 2nd, which was pretty bad.

They've go Jaws 3 in as one of the worst sequels, but Jaws 2 was pretty bad, too. Shark death by electrocution, pfffft. Phantasm 2 sucked as well.

Good one! The first Evil Dead is a cult classic. The second one is just plumb bad.

I saw Tokyo Drift last night, I walked in with low expectations after the second one (Which was IMO downright terrible, the story sucked, the characters sucked, the acting sucked.) and walked out impressed, the movie won't win any awards but it was a much better movie than the second one. The characters were good, the acting was better and the story wasn't terrible. Probably a movie worth seeing once.
