All I'm saying is that the company I work for operates a veneer plant. We tend to go after species like Larch, Fir, and Spruce for the most part. Pine is very far down the list. The only reason we log it is to try and control the Pine beetle population, which is a pretty massive problem right now, at least in B.C.
I hope you don't clearcut the fir. I understand that it this can be very problematic as it requires shade to regenerate. Selective logging seems to be the much better alternative with fir.

I won't claim to know the reasons or motivation behind the action, but I would encourage all of you to consult a source other than a tourism website for your information.

It's almost akin to posting a link to a topic on oilfans about McCreary missing a call and claiming the refs are out to get the Oilers. It might be true, but you better look deeper than that.

I seem to recall the cutting plan for the Kananaskis area was presented to the public, for their input, by Spray Lakes several years ago (in Bragg Creek?). It was vigorously opposed by the Bragg Creek Environmental Coalition and several other groups at the time, however I don't believe their efforts had a significant impact. I don't know whether the plan has been changed since due the pine beetle infestation.

We do clearcut Fir.

I haven't seen too much trouble with the growth of Fir seedlings, depending on what aspect the land is, what other species you may decide to plant there, moisture in the soil, etc.

From my observations of the clearcutting that has gone on in the old fir forest in the southern part of the Porcupine Hills in southern Alberta, the regeneration of fir has been very poor to date. From what I understand, they have been taking out fir and replanting mostly with pine, which IMO will completely change the character of the area. In this particular area, selective logging seems to be the much better alternative.

But with selective logging the company will only take the type of trees that they want and that will 'completely change the character of the area' as well.
I prefer 'stip cutting; myself, looking at that map there is a lot of that seemingly going on.

There is nothing wrong with logging so long as it is done in a responsible manner.
