Ahhh, Chomsky. Yeah... I suppose if I had to look at his writings, and then look at yours... well... one of you has a shred of credibility, and its probably not who you think it is But this is pretty old and broken ground, so if you're looking for an argument, dig up one of the previous dozen threads supporting and trashing him and knock yourself out.

The only army in this thread being discussed is the US army.
The only assertion I have made is that US soldiers tend to be drawn from the poorer segments of US society and geography. At that point for whatever reason several of you appear to have taken great offense to this, believing that I am somehow making value/moral judgements about the US and Iraq. I am not.

What does that matter? I can't talk about the social background of US soldiers without this question? Sheesh, some of you guys are a little too tied down by your local politics. I don't support any of the major parties (the last one I voted for was Conservative).
How is this question related to the topic? What do the Canadian, Australian, or British militaries have to do with my original claim?

Sure its Canada and the US, different wages, and such, but there is no way a first year military man would make more then 20 grand.

15 grand for entry level.
And that would be working practically everyday, as Military does not give Holidays or weekends off, especially if you are in a hotbed area. Make that 10 hours a day, 360 days a year working at a MacDonalds. 6 dollars an hour average pay(some regions higher, some at 5.15 so I brought it up to 6) comes out to approx. 22 grand.
More pay the entry level?
And that is without adding in overtime or bonuses either way.

Another " anything associated with America" sucks thread....even though it has nothing to do with the original topic, and hijacked by who? ....yeah big surprise.
yup folks...the US military services that recruit young men and women, offer education they could NEVER afford elsewhere, train them in those selected fields, then turn them on society to be better and productive citizens than they ever had a chance to do so elsewhere.....and are equated to suicide bombers?
Ok then.
Everyone straight on that now?

Yeah that was a poor comparison, IMO. I think military service can serve some people really well. It's not for me but kudos to those who give it a shot.

Ok everyone, you can all shut up now, Tranny just laid down the law on this issue. Honestly, I don't even know why we bother discussing this stuff when we could just ask you to tell us 'the way it is'. Boy are we wasting our time...
Hilarious that you sink to personal attacks instantly without even being involved in the thread. I think you're the moron. I guess thats one thing we have in common

Feel free to counter anything I wrote...please. But you wont... because you cant. And exactly what "law" was layed down? As far as discussion...there is none with you and your kind. You arent capable of it. Happy faces and emoticons included.

Who was I personally attacking? Please point out the name and the paragraph and "attack" in question, and i will apologize......but you wont because you cant.
Your entire M.O. is to check out from the facts written and try to get away from actual statements...nothing new for you and your kind. Its so predictable its sad.
Im quite happy to be considered a moron by you....honestly. It reinforces everything I believe in.

Everyone in the thread who disagreed with you. Unless your 'Morons' comment was directed at everyone who posted in the thread? Who was it directed at?

You your kind...the ones that cant debate without distorting the subject or what was stated.
As I suspected...wont counter what was actually said...because you cannot.
Well done. Proves my point.

Now that is interesting.
A "personal" attack is defined by you as "everyone".
May wanna check that one out. I was sure that "personal" was almost assuredly directed at one person....who knew?
Not likely....you're still wrong.

Army pay and benefits
I was in the Army and it paid OK. Experiences vary. Just like any job if you do well you get promoted and with increased responsibity comes increased pay.
You do something more dangerous you get more money, Basic Airborne = $150 a month (must make a jump every 90 days), Military Free Fall pay (HALO) = $225 a month, Combat pay = $225 a month (everyone stationed in a combat zone) plus no taxes on pay for time in country. Demo, Diving, submarine duty all have bonus pay plans. Once you reach the non commisioned officer ranks you can choose to live off post and the military gives you an allowance for a house or apt.
You do get weekends off unless deployed in most units, you get 30 days vacation a year, free medical, dental, all food and lodging paid. Also your duty clothes paid for and a clothing allowance to replace what is worn. What entry level civilian job give you that and the college plan?

For one... the unemployment rate in the US is what 4.7% lowest in the world I believe.
Social standards... eh about the same as the rest of the country. I served with people that came from poor families and also with some whose families were multi millionaires. People from small rural towns and urbanites. The deciding factor was why they joined. Some join for the money for college, some to get away and do something different, others for the adventure, some simply because they were bored and directionless in college and wanted discipline and to do something exciting, others just want to be part of something bigger than themselves. It really varies. The age also varies too. believe it or not while most enlist in the late teens or early 20s there are also some in the late 20s and 30s that join for the first time as well.

When you call someone a 'moron', that is a personal attack. When you tell them you disagree with their point of view and think it's wrong, that is a debate. And it's my M.O. to backtrack? Too rich.

Oh yea and...
The MOS 18D (special forces medic) is more near the training of a Physician's Assistant than a full blown doctor. They are authorized to do everything up to minor surgery. There are plenty of old SF medics that have retired and are now making over 75k a year as PAs and collecting their retirement pay from the Army... at age 40.

I agree with you on this, when I joined the military here most of the people were from the middle class, with some from the lower income group and some from the high income group. Its a volunteer organization, so you have a choice on whether you sign your services contract or not. Rich or Poor you make a choice, and you can't tell me that everyone who signs a contract isn't aware that there are battle zones and not peacekeeping zones, in the U.S. its Iraq, in Canada its Afghanistan, and chances are if you choose a combat trade your going to end up over there at one time or the other.
The military recruiters aren't press ganging people, or forcing them to sign contracts. When you walk into a recruiting center, or talk to a recruiter you should take some responsibility and research and learn about what your going to do.
There's no forced recruiting or drafting here, its volunteer.
Its easy to skew the stats when you base an assumption around recruiting centers located in the poorer urban areas of the city, whoever everyone ignores the fact that there are recruiters or recruiting centers in middle and upper income centers, high schools in good neighbourhoods and colleges, and people joint up with the military from there. Look at the ROTC programs in a lot of universities, they get a lot of middle and upper class recruits as well as people looking for a hand up for thier tuition.
Just my 2 cents.

It's hard to counter anything you wrote because you didn't really write anything. Nobody equated American soldiers with suicide bombers so nobody is in a position to defend a comment that you made up.
Jerks*
*jerks is just a random word that I typed at the end of my post and nobody should be offended by it and it is not a personal attack on anyone
