A few things that I prefer abou the CFL
1) No fair catches, kick returns are exciting and have huge hit/play potential like no other play in the game, why would you try to take that out of the game with a fair catch rule? No rule is dangerous, so the 5 yrd rule is a good compromise.
2) Touchbacks are gay. If you don't take it out of the endzone you get the ball at the 20 for nothing?????? I like the idea of making a team make a choice, risk needing a really long drive, or give up a point. As for field goals I see it a few ways, if you miss wide, but it is still in the endzone then the same thing applies for the kickoff/punt, but if it goes through the endzone then that probalby means you got close enought that maybe you should get a single point.
3) Much harder to run the clock, I hate it when a team can run more than 2 minutes off the clock to win a game, that's stupid, in fact I hate being able to run any time off the clock, but at least in the CFL you can't kill as much, makes the last few minutes that much better.
The NFL clearly has much better athletes, but the rules are stupid sometimes. Plus I like to be able to watch a game and not have 3/4 of it be comercials. The CFL is way better in that regard (though i know they'd rather not be).
Anyway, I like them both, but I think the CFL is a better game.

I used to be huge into the CFL; practically ignoring the NFL, then come December asking silly questions like "How are the LA Rams doing?"
I decided I needed to get into an NFL pool and now the last 2 years I found I was not really watching the CFL come September. There's a few things the NFL has going for it; and the biggest is the timing of the games. When are the games? Sunday at 11:00 and 2:00. Then one on Sunday night, and another Monday night. That's it. (I know there are exceptions, but you get my point.)
The nail in the CFL coffin for me was the Stamps raising their season ticket prices. Now for how much they want for my ticket I'll do a road trip to Seattle.
However; just to respond to the single point thing in the CFL; if you think that a single point gets awarded simply for missing a field goal; then you don't understand the dynamics of CFL football. Unless the ball goes through the end zone the single point must be conceeded by the receiving team. As a kick returner; I know that if I conceed I we get the ball on our (let's say) 45 yard line. However we are down by 3, and that will force us into a touchdown situation. But I see a hole down the middle. Do I run? Or conceed?
The situation I outlined happens more often than an automatic point; and often that can be the turning point in a game- a team tries to tie the game with a field goal and ends up being down 10 points instead.

Well I chose NFL, but only because Calgary Stampeders wasn't an option (like I suggested). Overall I prefer that style of football.

Fair catch rule kicks no-yards anyday. I hate that rule. How often do you see guys get a penalty because they bust-ass down field and don't know where the ball will land? Why should the opposing team be guarenteed five yards?
No-yards also detracts from big hit potential if you ask me. With fair catch you still see instances where a guy doesn't call it and he gets smoked. This happens way less with a no-yards rule IMO as tacklers are often forced to stop before attempting to hit the return man.

Yeah if you are passionate about an NFL team that is reasonable. Winning the Super Bowl in a 32 league with real parity is much more difficult than winning a Grey Cup in a nine team league with supposed parity.
Unlike you however, I have no connection to an NFL team. I like the football better, but I can't deny my love of the home squad, so I cheer Stamps and NFL.
BTW who played for the Stamps?

Just figured I'd answer these on a point by point basis. First off with the 5 yard rule is there's no strategy when it comes to punting because you can't down the ball like in the NFL . So basically CFL punting strategy becomes "kick the ball as hard as you can."

I'll give you the first point, but I don't like the whole "Well he tried really really hard so let's give him a point." They don't give you half a goal for hitting the post in hockey. That and I'm still waiting for the Grey Cup that gets decided on a single point.

Still it comes down to strategy and talent. When to use your timeouts, etc. Can the defense stop the offense on 3rd and 1 with 1:30 to go to give their offense time for one last drive? As opposed to the CFL where if there's 1:30 left you'll probably get at least two more chances to score.

Centre's rule (although Guards and Tackles are better).
Still O-Linemen are kings and D-Linemen are princesses.

LOL...I played D-line in high school. I was a DT so I thought some of the guards were pretty lame. I had one guy flip out on me because I was shoving him around on a punt return. I put him on his ass and told him to shut up.

You don't respectfully disagree. He's an idiot, tell him.
BTW I hate the Eagles. Why? One of my best buds is an Eagles fan. He's also from Edmonton and a die-hard Oilers and Eskimos fan; thus any team that he cheers for I automatically (on a sub-concious level) associate them with Edmonton and Edmonton sports teams.
Although I have no NFL team, the Eagles are my biggest rival.

You must have played for Western...or Wisewood.
Truth is O-linemen are the clowns. The one thing I love about them is that they always have a good time no matter what. Whereas the rest of a football team is all business, all the time, the O-line can seperate the game from the fun, and knows to be serious at game time. The rest of the time they goof around.
BTW, said buddy (the Eagles/Oilers fan I mentioned) hung out with a group of O-linemen because they are the best time. We had an intramural arena team consisting of 3 O-line, a tight end, and two linebackers:
"Speed Kills"
No disrespect though: D-linemen are probably next best at having a good time.

I do admire the athletes & will watch the last few minutes of a close game, but a full game will probably put me to sleep.
I like how the CFL is more wide-open game, higher scoring, pass-happy, seems to have more 'big plays'. I can see the 'bush league' argument...I think it's making some strides with the recent SMS & the introduction of instant replay.
That's my perspective...no one's really going to change it for me

I agree wholeheartedly with you calf.....I started watching the game in the old Ron Lancaster George Reed days and still watch as much as possible. The NFL has the glitz package for sure, and I do follow the Pats, but if the Stamps are on at the same time its no contest...color me red and white.

Nope. I played for Central. I always thought defense in general had a better time, with the exception of our MLB.
EDIT: I always associated Edmonton with the Packers. I like the Eagles because the organization hooked me up really well when I was in Philly and their fans are unreal.

Sweet, I was at the monday night Seahawks-Eagles game at the Linc. last year. How did they hook you up?
BTW: bring_back_shantz, who you so graciously labelled an idiot, was in Philly with me.

NFL is slow, dull and mostly a creation of media hype.
Give me the faster paced CFL without the prima donnas.

Yeah I got to see them play the Jets at the Vet a few years ago. They set me up with tickets to the mayor's box, a Corey Simon jersey, field pass, VIP parking, pictures with the players, and food.

Or football snob.. one of the two.
If you give a team 4 downs to get 10 yards, chances are they will. The game is slow. The amount of time wasted to get 3 yards on a play, then just take a knee for the last 2 minutes of play? I don't see the time investment.
Take the amount of action in a CFL game, a NFL game, and a NHL game... the NFL game has by far the least anount of action - even a "hardcore" football fan (who looks down on the "casual" fan) has to admit that.
