For the simple fact that hot girls don't have to be good at "other things" to get what they want. Fat girls on the other hand need to make people happy to get thier way. It's science man.
A dearly departed friend once imparted this great wisdom to me "Go Ugly Early". I don't follow it myself, but it served him well.

Thats why the mall is lame. If you took out all the repeat stores you would cut it down one third of the size.

Ah yes. I witnessed our friend take that course of action on many occasions, and this mantra hus stuck with me for many, many years. For those who need some more info:
- Walk into the bar and one or two drinks in chat up an ugly fat girl (plant the seed).
- Spend the rest of the evening hitting on anything that moves
- If nothing pans out, go back to the ugly girl because hey....you talked to her at the start of the evening when you were sober! You must ACTUALLY like her.
Go ugly early my young friends, it works every time.

Back on topic...
The reason Edmonton passed Calgary in 2005 was due to two events: the inaugural Grand Prix of Edmonton and the World Masters Games. While neither are glamourous like the Olympics, both attract huge numbers of spectators/participants.
Things will be back to normal when you see the stats for 2006.

The Grand Prix will be back, but not the Masters Games.

They must be counting former Edmontonians that go back on long weekends to visit their unfortunate relatives.

I doubt it. I'm sure once you're out of Edmonton the desire to go back isn't particularly strong.

Not sure that has much to do with it. The figures aren't from 2005, they're from 2004. Which again begs the question, why should we care about this.

Hmmm...that's a surpise then. I was sure it was these events that would have put Edmonton out front.
I guess people just like the priviledge of shopping at a big mall.

Weak argument, especially since those numbers are for 2004.
Don't we draw huge numbers from corporate people (not saying Edmonton doesn't have a corporate prescence, but that we have more). Should those business ''visits'' be counted as tourists?
Like I said, arguments both ways. No reason to downplay or come up with excuses.

If they spend money while they are in the city then yes they should. That is the point of tourism (and I suppose the chart that started all this) afterall.

Of course they're going to spend $ when they come here, but are they really here for tourism or business?

Doesn't matter really. Tourism is people spending money in another city then thier own. If they are here for business or pleasure I doubt Travel Alberta cares.
I guess I am looking more at the bottom line then the actual definition of tourism. If someone drives to Edmonton to walk around the mall and they don't spend anything should that count?

I am the only one who can read the first post? It says highest destination from people coming from other provinces, so it isn't just people from Northern Alberta. And it is the highest metropolitan detination for Americans. I would assume that means more people from the US actually go to Banff though.
