I only listened to it once, but I liked it after the first listen. As with all Tool albums, I imagine I'll like it more and more as time passes.

Underwhelming reviews:

Pitchfork
Rather than delving further into experimentation or exploring their strengths, Tool have made an...A Perfect Circle record.

i don't know if the reviews are fair or not, but I would hardly take pitchfork's word for it, especially about a band who is quite well known. If Tool was an indie band from montreal, they'd be all about it.

Vicarious sounds nothing like APC. It sounds like Tool.

Anyone who compares "10,000 Days" to APC is an idiot. This comparison has been made before with every other record and it is ALWAYS made by people who dislike TOOL.

The review by Pitchfork isn't even worth reading....I shouldn't have even responded to this rubbish.

The great thing about Tool is that with each album they just keep getting better and better. Lateralus was easily my favorite album prior to this one, and I think I had it in my CD player for 6 months straight.

On first listen, I wasn't convinced that this album was as good as Lateralus... but having heard the album at least 50+ times now (I "came upon" the album before it was released :P - but bought it on the 2nd), I think it is easily as good and possibly better.

It's funny... at first there were some songs I didn't like, such as "Roseta Stoned" that are quickly growing to be my favorites on the album. I also like how so many different songs tie together... like Vicarious/Jambi, Wings for Marie/10K days, Lost Keys/Roseta Stoned, Intension/Right in Two.

Wings for marie/10K days gets my vote for the best on the album.

Not true, they give Radiohead rave reviews and they have similar statures in music (at least in the States).

Do you know how difficult it is for artists to "stand up to their label?" For the vast majority of artists, the label they're on is their one chance, their lifeline. Saying "no" to that is like quitting your dream job because you don't like your boss.

Until the stranglehold grip record companies have over music and artists is abolished completely, downloading hurts artists as much as it does the companies. You may be "sticking it to the man" but you're sticking it to the people who make the music you love to. Poison the well at your peril.
Before the CRIA gets all uppity and tries to get my IP from Calgarypuck to sue me, it's worth noting that I still support bands that I like. I buy their CDs and I go to their shows as often as I can. To me, the live show is the best part and emboddies a lot of what music should be about.

But to address your point, I completely agree that it is an untenable position for most people. Some would say it was completely impossible maybe five years ago. If you fall into the same camp as me then you'll probably find the CMCC quite interesting.

As well, for another interesting way to sell your music, check out this post on Freakanomics.com. A Canadian niche artist lets you download her songs for free if you want (a gift from her) or let's you pay what you think it's worth.

Has anyone heard the new Chili Peppers record?

Ok my initial elation has worn off, and I am trying to decide if it is indeed as strong as Lateralus, but it is a KICK ASS album. If this album isn't important in those ways, than Lateralus must be. It's hard for albums to get recognised noways because if they have longer songs or do something different they don't get radio play. However if they get radio play, they are considered to 'pop'. It's a catch 22. But this band will be recognized with the 'old school biggies' one day soon.

As for the reviews. Yeah that one review that called it an APC album was way out to lunch. As DFF noted, Vicarious is very obviously Tool. I could have been on the Lateralus disk. I'm not just disagreeing with this review cause I like the album. I actually think the review which rated the album in the 30's (much lower) had many smart things to say and obviously understood the band and the music. But the one review comparing it to APC (and Emo music?) was absolute trash. He has no idea and I wonder how he has a job.

As for the Pepps, I love em. But the new album doesn lend as much of an evolution as they have given us lately (like with Californication)
