The first run of blu-ray discs are at future shop for $33 and hd-dvd discs look to be about the same. Not that much of a difference for a much superior picture and eventually superior sound with Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD.

Right now, these aren't aimed at Joe Six Packs, they are aimed at people who are willing to upgrade equipment to keep getting the best experience possible in their home theatres. Another $8 or $10 dollars a disc is nothing when you are looking for something to play on your new $10,000 1080p front projector in your dedicated home theatre room. The initial equipment will be expensive but like everything else in electronics, prices will fall when it takes off.

Very funny article on these two formats. Obviously meant to be taken as "funny"; however it's one of those things that's funny because it's pretty much true.

I think that is exactly how it happens.

Hopefully the DRM will be broken by then (there is already a proof of concept to do that).
