Maybe not though. I don't know. If not then they need some better PR.
I am just pointing out that they are used for more than just their pelts, contrary to what you have suggested.

I don't have a link...but I read that DFO hires veterinarians to monitor the seal hunt. In the opinion of one veterinarian, the club is more efficient and actually more humane than the gun.

I know this is an ugly topic for a lot of people. I'm not trying to sugar-coat it, but there is some science behind the rationale and methods of the seal hunt.

She's actually been on the bandwagon for quite some time now. She just used the Juno's to harp about it...

It seems that the reasoning for the seal hunt are pretty unclear. Makes it pretty tough to pass judgment on it for me.

Is it to save fish, pelts, shelter, meat?

Personally, I'd have to know more about the primary reasons before making a decision.

MJK, what do you meen by shelter?

There are many threads about this issue already if you want to backtrack and look at them.

Well like a god CP'r, I did a search on the seal hunt and only three topics came up, none of which seemed to deal directly with the hunt itself. If other threads do exist I appologize but I didn't come across any specifically like this one.

Unless people can get the Orca to eat more we will have a problem. Unfortunately since the seals are cute and cuddly they get great press in Euroland.

its an unfortunate truth, and like clockwork...the seal hunt seems to pop up on the radar every few years...I think a lot of the celebrities have no understanding of the reality "on the ground", ie the seals population is kept in check to protect the fisheries...

the pelts etc, seem to be a by-product of a necessary act of keeping the population under control.

Like BBS says above, there are tens of thousands of animals being killed everyday, and yet the media jumps all over this issue...

Some studies suggest the males should not eat omega 3 from plant of veg sources, only from meat sources such as fish. They say it increases the chance of prostate cancer. Might wanna look into that a bit if you're a male into flak.

I'll post the exact quote from the health mag i read it in when I'm at home. Don't have it with me right now.

As for why there are so many, I've wondered that as well. Didn't polar bears used to keep them in check before the ice receded? Any of our east coast friends have insight on that?
The club has a sike in it to penetrate the skull for instant death. Why is a firearm considered autamtically more humane?? It's the exact same way that cow's are slaughtered, except it's on a patch of ice.
