Use http://www.pricenetwork.ca and http://www.redflagdeals.ca

They post all sorts of sales on computer equipment.

The best I have seen come from Dell. Heck, Dell had a whole computer for
sale the other day for $249, $399 with a 17" monitor and bigger hard disk.
(It was a low end Celeron, but $249...geez)

Watch those sites for Dell sales. They have a not too bad sale right now:
http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topi...HS1&l=en&s=dhs

Be patient and you'll end up with a system costing less than Memory Express.

Also, Dell is running their 12 days of deals, day 9 and no computers yet.
Who knows?

ers

PS. I do not work for, nor am I affiliated with Dell.

I went to Memory Express and told them what I was looking for. They hooked me up with a nice setup for a decent price. Quite helpful, so I recommend them. I play COD2, Civ4, etc. and my system works great. Here are the basics of mine.

AMD 64 processor
nVidia 7800 GT video card
256 GB harddrive
1 GB RAM

I'd definitely get a dual cored. Sure there aren't many programs utilizing it but they are coming. Right now Quake4 and COD2 have patches that utilize it.

Dual core is the way of the future, but at a 800 dollar budget not really feasable.

LockeOut's suggestion of the 7600gt card is a good one. If you are tight on budget the BFG 6600GT OC card has a 50 mail-in rebate on until the 31st. It is a good card but is starting to get dated.

NCIX has the AMD 3700+ on for 250 bucks. They also have some good RAM prices right now. They have the Crucial Rendition 512mb pc3200 on for $39.99. You can only get a gigs worth but it's a start and something that is cheap to upgrade later when you have more cash.

Then all you need is a good mobo, hard drive and a power supply. If you are computer savvy and want to overclock, go for a DFI motherboard, if not Asus. Plus you'll need a dvd drive, writer preferably. Don't forget an extra fan, playing games makes the computer hot. Oh, do you already have a case?

The price is going up and up. You might want to get an Xbox 360 like others suggested.

How is this computer? I realize it's used.

It seems to be the video card that is screwing with your budget. According to the spec Jordan showed (for Oblivian) it reccommends an Ati X800 or nv6800 series card, and they are $270 and up. You need a Gig of ram now days, so thats 100-140. CPU will be around 200. You mentioned 200G HD, that is 100. New motherboard is $100 and up.

There's your 800, and you haven't got a case or an O/S yet.

You can save a bit more than that on the CPU (go semperon or celeron) and the Video card, but then you are starting to drop below today's recommendations for games, and you won't really have a 'gaming rig', which is generally higher end machine.

SO the question becomes, are you willing to accept what you can afford right now, and deal with the fact that you can't play at the highest resolutions right now, and even less than that in the future; or do you want to up the budget; or do you want to save up for a higher end machine?

Care to expand on that?

Any comments on the computer itself?

reasons that the computer is a pile of ****:

1. it is refurbished
2. you're buying from futureshop (worthless sales people)
3. its an HP so it will come with a lot of bloatware you don't need
4. if you want to play games the card is a POS
5. it only supports 1 device
6. it only has 1 extra PCI slot....

do you want me to continue?

I've bought from Futureshop in the past when it's been a good deal and had no problems whatsoever. I know there's a hate on for FS but in my experience I've had no problems at all. So what if the salespeople are worthless. I'm not buying them so if you know a little about computers you should be ok.

One of my computers is also a refurbished model as I could get a state of the art model for a much cheaper price, along with a good warranty. I don't regret that decision either.

Each to their own I guess.

You're the exception to the rule m8. There's always one.

Don't really want to go over around $350, tops. Prefer LCD... a lot, if possible. 19'' if I can get it. MemEx has some that are pretty close to that...

Ya... they got some pretty good stuff at Mem ex... I bought a lot of stuff there before and still do now when I need to buy em... (DVDs are only $20 for 50)

As for monitors... I'm pretty happy with Samsung... its not bad.. you can also check out OEM depot... (www.oemdepot.com) they have some stuff there too... maybe even try www.4starcomputers.com for the hell of it.

Nice system for the price. If you can pick up more memory, do it. That will be your biggest bottleneck on that system.

And too bad you weren't looking for th emonitor last week; Dell had their regular sale on and had a few 19" LCDs on for less that $300. If youcan wait, these sales happen every few months (or if you know anyone in the States, the US Dell sale just started today but I don't know what the deals are)
