Best Trade as a GM?
Couple of good ones this year that helped me get out from the aging team I had which included,
Deadmarsh, Daze, Girard, McEachern, Zhamnov, Whitney and
Yzerman.
-
Chris Simon and
Patrick Stefan for
Marian Gaborik.
Basically shipped off a penalty taking machine in Simon who had little to no production and weak forward Stefan for mega-scorer and franchise winger
Gaborik. This deal went a long way to help some of the goalscoring problems and Gabby seems to be lighting up this year as well. CM Punk was reluctant but a last minute discussion saw
Gaborik come to the West Coast.
-
2 First Round Picks for
Michael Ryder and
2 Second Round picks (Sent to LA as a conditional).
This was clearly a winner as the previous Dallas Stars GM was hungry for first round picks in the draft for some reason. The original deal had another player coming to Los Angeles, but I was able to pry away
Ryder who is quite young and played on the first line most of the year with good production.
Ryder should be a lock for one of the top lines next year as well.
-
Eric Daze for
John-Michael Liles and
Josef Vasicek
Eric Daze had a long history of trouble so was able to move him very early in the season for
Liles who was languishing in the minors for Buffalo. It proved to be a wise move as Daze's back gave out and his future career prospects became doubtful.
Liles, a US Olympian, became the Kings leading scorer on the blueline and looks to be on the LA blueline for years to come.
Vasicek was also injured but later became a key cog in the trade securing
Jarret Stoll.
-
5th round pick for
Tim Thomas
This trade really did not have an effect on the club this season, but looks to be quite a steal in terms of next year.
Thomas is one of the great stories this year as he came from nowhere to steady the Bruins.
Thomas looks to have gotten a step ahead of the other goaltenders in Boston as the starter and should provide as a valuable player during next year with
Cloutier as a 1-2 tandem.
Worst Trade?
I did not have too many losers this year but one that really did not work out too well was...
-
Sergei Brylin and
Andrei Zyuzin for
Scott Walker
Walker was supposed to step in and help solidify the scoring lines. He actually did quite a good job during the games he did play in but once again was injured in no time and did not provide the contribution we hoped for. He did provide useful near the trading deadline as he was one of the players shipped to the Island for
Mark Parrish, who should be on one of the top lines next year.
Who do you prefer talking to on MSN?
I do enjoy talking to all the GMs if for a trade, analyzing one of their potential deals or talking puck in general. I do seem to talk to
James (Avalanche), Becky (Hawks), Joe (Predators), Chris (Leafs), Dayel (Thrashers), Dave (Panthers), Aaron (Capitals) and Chad (Devils) a bit more than other GMs. All GMs are great to talk to and seem to be quite on the ball when talking trades, etc. Lot of people had different strategies and needs, but have to say a great group of GMs.
What pi$$es you off about the game?
Nothing really ****es me off, once in a while an agent here or there.

Seriously though the league is run quite smoothly without much to be upset by. If I had to pick something, trying to find the proper chemistry between the players on your squad seems to be a bit tricky. Also not being able to chat to some of the GMs who rarely come on MSN does not seem to help trading much. Uncertainty in the rules, cap, Cheese Rule, etc for upcoming years is also quite strange. It leaves one wondering what sort of strategy to pursue.
What do you
about the game?
The best thing is the activity in the league with all the great GMs. If it wasn't for the high level of activity the league really would not be as fun as it is. The keeper aspect of the league is also a nice thing. Regular updates on the site in terms of player movement, stats, etc is quite nice. Also get quite a laugh out of some of the ribbing some GMs get (ex. Noob) which keeps the atmosphere of the league lively.
