I got it a couple weeks ago from some stupid girl at a bar. I was sick for about a couple days before I went to see the doctor and got some anti-biotics. I felt cold all the time, was never hungry and just generally felt like crap. Also, avoid pizza! Thats the only advice I can give you as nothing really made me feel better.
After I started feeling better I craved Mcdonalds non-stop. I had it everyday for a week. This is probably a very isolated case but try to refrain.

Well, I downed the perogies, but only with help from a throat numbing spray.
I've found from my adventures so far, 1 cup of green tea with a huge spoonful of honey works the best. I feel thirsty all the time though and just want to grab a nice huge glass of cold water, but it hurts like hell.

In moderation it's okay.

Cow is right, the big bowl of steaming chicken noodle soup works pretty well.

I think Amoxicyllyn (sp?) is the best thing for strep throat by a mile. I've had that nasty thing a few times especially when I was younger, and I'm allergic to pennicyllyn. They used to give me Erythromycin for it after my penicyllyn alergies were discovered, but it wasn't particularly effective. But after beig treated with Amoxicycyllyn the last two times and within 30 hours I felt much better.
As for what to do when you have it, chicken soup, tea, my mom's canned raspberry fruit all seem to be good for me. Which reminds me I should go home for a visit and raid mom's pantry for some medical supplies.

I just finished up a brawl with strep a couple weeks back. I waited a week before I made it to see the Dr. The pain was out of control. Couldn't even swallow my own saliva. Cepical(sp?) or T3's weren't fazing me. Dr prescribed Amoxicyllyn(allergic to penicyllyn) and it started to break within 24 hours. Complete hell it was.

Well, looks like I'll be returning to work tomorrow. Pain is bearable enough now with painkillers to work through. Just going to have to bring some honey with me
Thanks for the advice all, it most likely helped me speed up the recovery.

Penicillin V is first line treatment for strep. throat; amoxicillin is 2nd line and not necessarily better on the basis of "recovery"

Glad to hear you are doing better. If it was going to last much longer and you were unresponsive to antiobiotics, you might have had mono!

funny to find this string.
I had a fever all weekend, missed work on Monday. Went back to work on Tuesday felt average but worked it out. Tuesday night the sore throat and ear ache hit.
Wednesday at work unbearable but I have three back to back impact meetings I can't get myself out of.
Straight to a clinic on the way home with an ear ache, swollen glands and a very sore throat. Can't swallow my own spit, in some pretty big discomfort.
Doc is shocked. Strep throat is so bad that my ear and my glands (whole side of my face is numb) are just collateral damange.
Been on double dosed penicillin yesterday and today. Went to work this morning to get some serious stuff out of the way. Came home and slept for three hours with the family out of the house (haven't slept the past two months).
Good to see I haven't been alone.

When I was first diagnosed I was in Winnipeg for Christmas. The doctor said something like "Let me guess, you are from Calgary." (She hadn't looked at my chart yet.)
She explained that because the begining of winter was so mild here this year that many of the bugs that normally die due to cold survived.

I've heard this mentioned, and they even have a name for it now: presenteeism.
I guess one of the major causes of it is parents who use their sick days up when the kids are sick, then come into work when they themselves are sick.
The problem is: how do you deal with it? Do parents get more sick days then single people? Do you need to reward people for staying home? If so, how do you make sure that won't be abused?

I was a regular (as in annually or more) sufferer of strep throat in my early 20's. I'm mid 30's now and haven't been to the doctor about for about 10 years for it, though i still get it now and again... about once per year, usually in December.
When I did go for treatment (it was pure hell when I first started getting it), the throat swabs they did almost always disclosed the non-contagious kind (Type B?... can't remember anymore).
Anyway, many specialists later (I used to get it in a very nasty way), nothing was ever done. I'm told that what I had, gradually dissolved my tonsils. I've also developed something of an immunity, such that, even though it still hurts when I have it, it is now nothing more than a minor annoyance (I might miss work from it, but that's rare).
That Chlorosceptic (sp?) stuff does wonders getting through the pain.
Not all strep conditions are contagious. For example, I've never passed it on to a girlfriend, regardless of the activity
I feel for all of you that get it bad. Its amazing how it can totally incapacitate you.
