I find their cowardice in abandoning Conservative policy to be very self-serving and this does not bode well for the future leadership of the Conservative party - sometimes real leaders have to implement hard policy decisions even if they are unpopular, if they believe it is the best policy. Clearly, the public health system does not work, and no one opposed to private health care has ever offered an alternative other than throw money at a broken system.

Well, I partially agree its cowardly to back down. However, due to the NAFTA and CHA implications of the "third way", it is pretty important (for the federal government) to have a national concensus before moving on, and one would not want to travel down a confrontational road with the Harper government your people voted 63% in favor of, especially when all the alternatives are horrible to most Albertans.
Alberta would do well to focus on reducing health system demand (preventative programs), continuing projects like the hip replacement one, and gradually more and more alternative means until it becomes a must-change situation, sadly. Its not Harper who's stopping it... its the other three parties who want no part in it.
