Is it me, or is womens hockey really boring, stupid, and a waste of time? I say it's time to remove this Olympic joke and stop giving Canada and the US free medals......I don't understand how anyone can get excited for this...Winning a gold in this does absolutly nothing for me....I could care less, in fact I would feel embarassed accepting a medal for such a joke....lets try and win something where there is actual competition and winning means something, not a free handout.

For the ladies on these teams, the World Championships and the Olympic Games *do* matter, and are the biggest stage for their sport. These tournaments are their Stanley Cups.
We shouldn't make light of the accomplishments of these teams. Canada and the US will duke it out for the gold... and that at least should be a good battle. It wouldn't be too surprising to see it fall out of the list of Olympic events, but to say that these are free medals is unfair.
Italian goalie= SHORT. I don't even think she cleared the crossbar standing up!

This is why they took checking out of women's hockey.
I remember watching the first Women's World Championships in 1990 (with Team Canada's 'Hot Pink' uniforms). At the time, checking was still allowed, and Team Canada just destroyed every other team in the tournament.
I don't think they'll take Women's Hockey out of the Olympics because the IOC doesn't want to have single-gender sports in the Games anymore. I believe both biathalon and bobsled were men's-only sports in Calgary, but they've both added women's competitions over the last couple of Games.
Also, Italy is in this tournament because the host nation is automatically in the tournament, even though they don't belong there at all. I think the other nations are much more competitive (although Canada and the USA continue to dominate).
There was a time that the Canadian men's teams used to win games in the Olympics by these types of lopsided margins, but the Olympics gave other nations an incentive to get better and develop their hockey programs to the point where there are a half dozen leading nations.

It's just you.
I love watching the passion these girls play with. If all NHLers played with this much heart on a regular basis the league would be multiple times better.

I don't like this 16-0 stuff... reeks of bad sportsmanship. I really don't think they needed that many goals. Stop at 5 or even 9, and then just stop trying... you don't need to humiliate them, cause these sorts of things aren't forgotten.
I wouldn't be surprised if this translates into some lopsided asskickings by Italy towards Canada in soccer one day.

She only played the first 2 periods. She let in 9 goals out of the 16 scored.

I'm with you, but then again I find women's club hockey at the U of I a lot of fun. I just love a good hockey game, women, men, whatever.

Could honestly care less. Maybe once the talent pool balances itself out more, but for now, its just ridiculous. Kudos to the women for being so dominating, but god, how anyone can find that entertaining is beyond me.

From what I saw of the game, Canada wasn't really playing at the top of their game. They were going easy on the Italians - as much as possible. Italy was just a vastly inferior team.
Like the commentators said at one point, for the Italians, just being able to ice the puck was an accomplishment. The mostly Italian crowd cheered when Italy was able to do something as minor as clearing the zone.
If Canada had played with the same intensity as they likely will against the Americans, the score would have been a lot higher than 16-0.
I think it would have been more humiliating to the Italians for Team Canada to just stop playing and not even try to get shots on the net.

Not in women's soccer! They're only three places ahead of us in the FIFA rankings.

I thought it was a really close game, Italy really gave you canucks a run for your money. i was kinda hoping they would turn it round right at the end
and as for those russians, they nearly had you beat aswell :P

Blame the IIHF and it's ridiculous rules. Goal differential = home ice in the medal round. Canada and the US have to run up the scores or risk having the other team have home ice in the gold medal game.
