I find it strange that Languages seem to have the need to translate certain city names and not others. Berlin is Berlin, etc.

Taking your word that those are the local names for those places; I do understand why we have an English word for them. But how hard is it for us to say Torino; the English and Italian names are almost the same.

CBC had an interesting feature on Torino. Most people know about Juventus, the famous football team from Turin.

In the 1940s the big team was Torino (the Toros). They won many championships and stocked the Italian national team. There was a tragedy, and the team was lost in a plane crash into a big cathedral in Turin. The teams has struggled ever since, up and down from the first division. One of the sons of the ill-fated team was a torch bearer. The Toros will later move into the Olympic stadium (which was a Juventus stadium remodelled for the games).

Torino sounds more Italian than Turin.

Its good marketing by NBC plain and simple. If you gave the two names which is easier to sell as Italian which is why NBC chose it.

CBC doesnt have a marketing department so they call it whatever they want.

I thought that Turin was the city and Torino was the province?
