On hfboards there was a guy claiming to know Huberdeau's brother that said Huberdeau has needed a surgery since the summer and that they'd shut it down once the Flames were out of it.
I'd love to know why exactly that was the strategy because he clearly has not been right for most of the season, hopefully this still leaves enough time for a full offseason training regimen.

I don’t know why players try to play through injuries that affect their play this much.

This explains so much. He looked like he could barely move out there, and I don't remember his skating ever being this bad. I thought he was just getting old, but this makes more sense.
It still doesn't excuse his bad decision making or terrible passing abilities, but perhaps he just didn't feel right doing anything this year.

Will be interesting to see if this is the opportunity for Kerins. He’s needed a top six role to open up.

Huberdeau on LTIR may be a more valuable asset for team that needs cap space?

Makes so much sense.
His effort was there but it was evident something was up. He looked sluggish, wasn't quick in transition (was never a burner) but more importantly was avoiding contact (not like Hubey at all).
Hopefully next year he starts fresh and clicks with whoever we draft in the top 5.

He still gets to enjoy his Olympic break.

The Calgary Flames announced today that forward Jonathan Huberdeau will undergo season-ending hip resurfacing surgery.
The procedure will be performed in March following consultations with the Calgary Flames medical team and specialists. Huberdeau is expected to make a full recovery in time for the start of the 2026-27 season.
"After extensive evaluation, this was determined to be the best course of action for Jonathan’s long-term health and performance," said Flames General Manager Craig Conroy. "While it is difficult to lose a player of his calibre, our priority is ensuring he is fully healthy moving forward. Huberdeau has been managing hip-related symptoms throughout the season. The decision to proceed with surgery was made in collaboration with Jonathan, his representative, our medical staff, and specialists to support his long-term well being."

It's hip resurfacing surgery ... only guy who has really been able to come back from that to any degree is Patrick Kane.
Edit: and Klingberg — on both hips

Who ever knows how long a player deal with something that they don’t want surgery for and think they can play through it. Monahan is a great example of this

Someone on CP had this back in like November, right?
I still think it’s rad there’s enough people connected to the organization to various degrees that we get little sprinkles of behind the scenes stuff like that.

Perhaps we are planting seeds today that grow into an LTIRetirement in a couple of years.

Neither guy is playing particularly well right now so it’ll be interesting to see.

Sounds like the beginning of what could be a trip to Robidas Island before that contract expires.
Huby has been atrocious this season and this helps explain why. Hopefully he can be much better next year.

So this opens the door to LTIR for the remainder of the contract... or at least an excuse to do that after a (probably) mediocre AHL conditioning stint sometime next season.
I didn't expect this for a couple more years, but I'll take it.

Personally if that’s the case I totally see why and can appreciate him wanting to play until it was clear the Flames were out of it.
