The only way for mankind to travel the immense distances of space is to break the physical restrictions of our bodies.

Are we then still human?

Ship of theseus.

I have begun to pine for a culture like future where benevolent AI control basically everything we do, giving us the illusion of total self control and free will, but in reality we are but specs of dust that they are intrinsically motivated to keep docile and happy.

In that respect, it is immaterial what "our" destiny is. Unlikely any human as we understand them will explore the galaxy meaningfully physically within a human lifespan. But, a generation ship of humans controlled by a benevolent AI may plod along through our galaxy over millenia.

We also don't need to physically spread out to theoretically dominate the universe. That would be a lot of work.
