You have to start the backup on the 2nd night of back to backs in game 2 of an 82 game season. Nonsense to even be discussing starting Wolf B2B this early in the season.

Maybe if we were playing Florida or Carolina. This is a team in our division.

Of course I guess the Canucks will be out of the playoffs by December so it's a moot point.

Why? He's a professional athlete who has shown capable of playing and exceling in back to back's consistently with the Wranglers. He's the best player on the team.

This whole "managing workloads" mindset has become far to overblown the last half decade or so in my opinion.

High end starting goaltenders absolutely can, and probably should be starting 65 games a season.

A back-to-back at the start of the season where even tuned up athletes haven't built up their full game stamina is a lot different than doing it in December. Wolf was huffing and puffing pretty hard -- a lot more than I typically notice.

You could see the early season in a few players -- Backlund, for example, who had a great game, had a tiredness brain fart in overtime where he shifted towards the attacking zone when the Oilers had loose puck possession, letting McDavid skate right by him to create a 2 on 1. That's not a mistake a mid-season Backlund makes very often.

Early season is different and needs to be handled differently. This is going to be a pretty tough game, and hopefully they can ride the adrenaline of that win in front of the back-up goalie.

Wolf had an entire game, OT and 8 rounds of a shootout. He played his ass off. Then he travelled. He won't play tonight.

It is a tough call. Do you play Wolf in 3 straight games, including the third being an earlier afternoon game?

I would start Cooley in Vancouver tonight. They are a divisional opponent, however.

Or do you start Cooley at home on Saturday? I wouldn't. That's the season opener, and although it isn't a divisional opponent (and rival), it is still a Western Conference opponent. So the only question in my mind is: "Does Wolf start all three games, or does Cooley start tonight?"

I think we see Cooley. Hope he does well if so! I think too many people are being too hard on him given his preseason performance - lots of goalies look terrible in preseason games. I will wait to see what he looks like after 4 or 5 NHL games before passing judgement, at the very earliest.

With the game going to OT, then an 8 round shootout, there is no way Wolf starts again tonight.

Also, you have to find our what you have in Cooley, sooner or later - it's a 20 man roster, and you have to trust everyone to do their job.

There is a lot of data that refutes this, but if you're going to do it, a young goalie with minimal wear on the tires is who you do it with. But my guess is Cooley starts, Wolf gets Saturday.

Hoping Parekh and Honzek are both in the lineup today. In place of Pachal and Lomberg I guess?

I'd be fine with Lomberg out or Kirkland or Farabee

I thought Klapka had a solid game. Was physical and was stirring things up against the oilers. Hope he keeps it up tonight.

I think everyone wants to see him do well but the concerns surrounding this guy go far beyond his abysmal preseason. Cooley hasn't been able to stop a hockey puck or win a hockey game since his concussion 10 months ago. To add on to that he's 28 years old with a career .902 in the AHL, and an .870 in the NHL.

I think all the evidence we have beyond a two month heater to start last year suggests heavily that he is simply a below average goaltender.

I hope for the best obviously but I certainly don't like the fact that this organization finds itself starting this guy at the NHL level at the moment.

At what point did we start to believe that a 24 year old kid can't play almost every night?

Lombo played only 10 minutes so I could see him coming out. Kirkland played even less but they probably still need him at centre and for the PK. Insert Honzek and Parekh and go from there.

Farabee stood out in a bad way. At least Lomberg and Kirkland brought the energy.
