I think the risk is small with Poirier - he may get snapped up, and I am thinking this based on the 2nd half of the previous season. If there is a team that is weak on D, I would take Poirier and insert him into the bottom pairing and see if there is something there. I think the Flames should have done this last season, and had Poirier have some reps on the 2nd unit PP.

With that being said, I would be he clears. I think teams will wait for a better name. out there, but I do think there is a risk. Hopefully he clears, and then at some point this season, comes up for a good look.

Was he? The guy was a 3rd round pick for a reason and those defensive inefficiencies never went away. His production was good, just outside of the top ten for D in the AHL. There's plenty of players who've been waived due to eligibility at this age and went on to have NHL careers. We tend to put way too much attention on waivers. There's always guys that go on to have good careers despite the waivers eligibility. Eeli Tolvanen, Gustav Forsling, etc have been on waivers in recent years.

I think so, I remember going to see training camp (rookie) at Seven Chiefs a few years ago and he was far and above the best guy out there. Fast forward a few years and you’re right, he’s not that guy anymore.

If the Flames decide to move on from the player after he clears, some AHL teams could probably use him. A minor league swap, or as part of a larger deal.

Or they just continue to let him develop and see what they have. Waivers isn't some end game we tend to think it is. Pospisil was on waivers this time three years ago and now has a contract for three seasons with 7.5 million. Pospisil was a 4th round pick, one round behind Poirier, if anyone was thinking Poirier was the future, or that the first time being eligible for waivers is a death sentence ... we need to restart rethinking things.

1. Professional Sports are not 'careers' they are 'opportunities.'
2. An NHLer typically lasts into their early or mid 30s if they're lucky.

So at 23 you're staring at a 10-year opportunity...at best.

However, that is not to say that all is lost! I've said it a million times, if I were a marginal NHL or AHL player I'd be taking deals and schlepping through European Leagues.

Players, from an all-round perspective, peak around age 26-28. So he has not peaked yet as a player. But the road to the nhl post-23 is tougher as you're past the fastest part of your development curve so risk being passed by guys in the 18-22 age curve.

I still think this player has the skills to get to the NHL, but doubt he gets claimed on waivers this early on.

I imagine the percentage of NHLers who play over, say, 100 games but started after age 23 is pretty small.

1. Being a professional athlete is a career. Schlepping oneself through Europe and getting paid to do the sport you've trained your adolence is means you're doing it professional, albeit not at the highest level possible. Still a career, even if it's a short one

Making 100,000s of yankee dollar to play a sport? Most of these guys are not really scholastic, and sports are way easier than trades. So yeah, nothing is really over for him at 23. He’s got an awesome life full of fun, team mates and travel ahead of him.
