Sharks had a LHD surplus and probably wanted Reaves as a guy policing the youngsters. Not that I think it's a good deal, just probably what San Jose was thinking.

I read somewhere the Sharks were looking to trade a d-man as they had a surplus after picking up Orlov and Leddy.

I doubt either guy in this deal will last more than a year in their new digs.

On first glance looks terrible for San Jose but Thrun has had almost no impact in two seasons.

Thrun is better than Benoit for that third pairing. I think that his problem is that he was a huge NCAA star, and now his confidence is completely shot.

But he should have more impact than Ryan Reaves.

It is a nothing trade, not sure why such a reaction. Reaves contract is up at the end of the year.

Reaves closing in on 1000 games. Crazy.

Yeah, it's a nothing trade that doesn't make a lot of sense for SJ, but oddly enough they took him off the Leafs hands. Let Treliving off easy. They could've got better players for the same salary. He's virtually a liability as an everyday player on any team.

Whelp, Thrun is a Norris candidate, now.

Weird reactions in this thread. Thrun has done nothing to attract anyone's interest. His only contribution to the worst team in the NHL for the last 3 seasons was to help them get good draft position.
Orlov-Klingberg
Leddy-Liljegren
Mukhamadullin/Dickinson-Thompson
X: Ferraro, Desharnais, Thrun
I think their next move would be to trade Ferraro. After that, Desharnais probably gets buried if no one takes him on waivers.
They still desperately need to upgrade that #1RD spot.
Reaves doesn't really hinder the Sharks in any way and this gives him a chance to get some 4th line minutes that he wasn't going to get with the Leafs.

Thrun is kind of like Perunovich. Incredible in college and the AHL, but could never win the trust of their coaches in the NHL. If a player like that isn't put in a position to succeed, they will not suddenly become proficient at a whole other skillset.
I'm not sure why players are given sheltered offensive minutes, and others are left off of a powerplay, because they 'haven't earned it', but it's the best feature of their game.

Tre has perfected the Neal for Lucic trade formula. Too bad for the Leafs that he still can't avoid signing those contracts in FA.

Ryan Reaves has played in over 900 NHL games and has made over 23 million dollars in career earnings. Incredible.

Reaves is also there to protect the young guys. I know some people hate it, but it’s a thing. Players will think twice about taking runs at Celebrini and Smith.
You play bigger with a guy like that in the lineup

I mean it's obvious why a team would acquire Ryan Reaves. At the end of the day, teams like his particular set of skills and San Jose is closer to the floor than the cap, so they don't care about his cap hit

When was the last time he managed to protect anyone in TOR? Reaves had 1 fight (Olivier) in 35 GP last year, and he didn't even win that fight.
He's too slow to keep up with the play now, and players just avoid fighting him. That's why he mostly stays as a healthy scratch.

Why? He's pretty gawdawful and we have a ton of better defense prospects on the way soon.
Like, I literally have no idea why you would want him. Can you explain?

but his sheer presence in the press box makes all the difference. Or so I'm told.
The sooner the NHL moves on from these relics of the past, the better.
