Run 8 D, plug in Bean and Miromanov into the rookie spots when you need to give them a break (especially in the first half of the season as they are learning).
Nothing wrong with having Hanley as the 7th dman to start season and see how it plays out. Miromanov should be in the ahl.

After his solid 2nd half of the year last year I have no problems with Hanley being our 7th D again.

Except he won't be the 7th D. He would be slotted in with Weegar pretty quickly and I doubt the Flames move out Bean.

LD depth would become
Hanley
Bahl
Bean
Kuznetsov
Solovyov
Poirier

RD depth
Weegar
Pachal
Parekh
Miromanov
Brzustewicz
Morin

I would rather leave the spots open and find out what we have with Kuznetsov, Solovyov, and Poirier.

Hanley isn’t some “world beater”. If the kids can’t earn his spot where ever it might be then they are not ready.

I wouldn’t lock Bean into a guaranteed slot.
He had a rough year and could easily be bumped, burried or traded.

Yup, if the prospects can’t beat out Bean and Hanley then that’s not a promising sign

I don't disagree with you. But Bean is passable. And I suspect Brzustewicz is already ahead of Miromanov. Miro had his opportunity last year and didn't run with it - time to so if Brzust can.

The prospects have beaten out the Beans and the Rooneys in the past, but the guys with one-way contracts always end up staying up and the guys on two-ways always end up going down.

Solid signing, proved he can play, but I don’t think he necessarily will block anyone if they prove capable.

He earned this with his paly last year.

With Ras almost certainly gone, they needed a vet, and IMO, Hanley is a perfect player to slot in because he will quietly and efficiently do a decent job, isn't in anyone's way, and can be traded as soon as someone shows they are ready to take his spot.

Yup, zero problems with this. He and Weegar were solid together.

If one or two of the young guys want a spot, come to camp and take it.

Totally fine with this, especially if Ras is out the door. Hanley was probably one of the best 'bang for buck' players in the NHL last year.

Not sure who the team was negotiating against, but it’s reasonable enough.

I like this signing. If the kids struggle, he's a vet who can eat big minutes next to Weegar to take the pressure off. If the kids excel, he can drop back to a 5/6/7 type role without much trouble.

If there's a logjam, it'll be the other UFA vet(s) we sign that are the issue, not Hanley IMO.
