I had an issue a couple years ago with a water main break and emailled her through the city site and I got a response. I would hope you do too.
Regarding your father, I've had similar experiences. My mother died from cancer several years ago and my father died from heart failure. All experiences are different but there are similar emotions felt so I can relate. I'm here if you want someone to talk to who's been through something similar.

There's gotta be an ombudsman or something you can take this too. Definetely good job on taking it to the media, CFCN had that piece about the people being evicted by the landlord's excuse that he needed to change the gas meters. Now it's the City being idiots. Please take it to the media and fight this pathetic Bronco-Bureaucracy.

I am SO sorry to hear that FurnaceFace... I have already lost my Mother, so I guess I know half your pain. But I am, and have been prepared for Dad to go. He has actually held on far longer than any doctor has predicted.
I truly, and sincerely, appreciate your comments, and well wishes. As do I from all that have posted. It HAS been a day from hell, but tommorow is another day. And with it... rebuttal...
No one messes with Shawnski.

When I was poor, I lived in a condo owned by the Edmonton version of the Calgary Housing Corperation. I freaking hated it, and hated them. I've never been treated with more contempt than by those jerks.
My advice would be to run as fast as you can away from those morons, and for the love of God, don't look back, lest ye be turned to salt.

Not to try and detract from the saddest part of the story, but if you are looking for an inexpensive place to move to; I have used the following links when looking for a place to live. I have nothing but the warmest wishes for what you and your father are going through; and a big kudos to you for putting your life on hold to a certain extent to be able to take care of him.

Thanks Ken. For the record, I am not taking care of Dad. I am just trying to be able to spend more quality time with him, which we have done.

I know, but that quality time spent is something not everybody can do. You may not be taking care of him physically, but you are taking care of him in spirit; and so many times that is just as important as physical care.

Bronco's gotta go. Unfortunately he'd probably be replaced by another Liberal who'd do the same kind of practices.
Spend-happy people are usually the ones elected into City Halls, because spending money locally usually has results the electorate can see, like new overpasses. Federal and Provincial spending usually isn't as apparent.
Bronco used to work in the construction industry, so I've always suspected that he's been lining the pockets of his developer friends with all the expensive construction going on.
Shawnski, that's really awful what's happening to you. You could contact Global TV about your plight, I'm sure they'd love to do a story on it. I swear most of the people at City Hall have their heads firmly up their asses. I interned there once, and it's a Bizarro world there.

I sure hope they don't air it tonight; with the Flames game on nobody will ever see it.

I could be wrong, but this is probably to do with the closure of the York Hotel as a low-income housing space (which was in turn because the Encana development will involve the York. I remember a piece on the news a few months ago where some SAIT students were getting evicted to make room for some of the tenants from that building, and at that point they still needed to find a lot more units.
As others have said, there's no reason why the city can't build a new development for these people--hell, they could even build something to accomodate a lot more low-income residents. Lots of vacant land east of City Hall (but they're probably still hoping to resurrect their east-village idea). Or just buy one of the hundred or so Impark lots and build something there.

You willing to foot the bill for it? The City of Calgary has only one revenue source - taxpayers. And you may not own a house, but my property taxes are beyond reasonable now.

Only thing is, that the cost of buying this building would probably damn close to the cost of building a similar one.
Anyhoo, CTV just left. We talked for about an hour and a half. Don't laugh too hard when you see the interview, or my flat!!
Seriously... stop laughing!!

I would expect tonight (5?).
Just remember.. I do NOT have a good side!
Edit, oh and Fotze? I got in the Bronco in a ######bag line... but it was before the camera was rolling! The cameraman and Cynthia laughed, but concurred that we couldn't tape it.

Over the long-term life of the building, even a low-income rental property should be able to pay for itself--it's not as though these people are being given free accomodation--a lot of them have jobs and can pay modest amounts for their housing (and others are seniors or disabled folk who are given money for their basic living expenses). Say you've got a hundred units, averaging $400 a month--that's 24 million over the first fifty years of the building's life. Some of that goes to ongoing maintenance, yes. But a significant amount can go against the initial cost of the building. And surely it would solve more than the current formula of buying other buildings and displacing people... That costs money too, and doesn't result in an increase in vacancies.
It's not a question of the city not having money, it's a question of it poorly spending the money that it does have.
