I’ve said they should offer other teams a 2-0 lead and we just want to play the third period.

But if the Oilers could somehow lose out...then you have the Wild Card spot and the 3rd Pacific spot available which I think increases your odds a little bit.

The Flames could pass both the Blues and the Wild. I'd rather chase a team with 2 games remaining than 4.

What do we make of the slow starts in Utah, and against Vegas and San Jose?
They play a taxing brand of hockey. Might be tough to start that way until you're dragged into the game?
Wills mentioned the team was pretty devastated when they got off the plane in San Jose and found out the Wild beat the Stars. Some latent disappointment affecting their play?

Have to think the Greg Millen news would have affected the group as well, but either way the slow starts have been pretty common so your first point fits for me

They seem to pick and choose what games they start hot for. Dallas for example. So yeah, might be tough to fire yourself out of a cannon every night unless you're just naturally up for the opponent or as you mention they get dragged into the fight.
So expect a slow start tonight unless Trouba throws the body around.

Klapka has a history (albeit extremely tiny) of playing well against the Ducks. So there's that! Hopefully he helps to get the Flames engaged early in this one.

Could see Lomberg trying to get a fight going early to get the team riled up after the struggle they had last game. Not saying he should or not but he can be a spark for this team sometimes.
But they should not need any spark. They are in the thick of this race and have played with a lot of heart to be where they are. Hopefully they come out of the gate flying tonight.

Count me as one of the fools who still thinks they can make it.

^^ They shouldn't need a spark. The race and being so close should be enough, but it clearly isn't.

I think Millen's death could have factored into the start against San Jose as well. Though you are right the slow starts have been a recent trend.
I think indeed they are likely feeling demotivated, to some extent, because of what is happening on the out of town scoreboard, which has not been helpful at all. How could they not look at St. Louis and think "f*** just lose a g-d game".
Really hard to play at that level of intensity and discipline for as long as they have.

I agree - it must be incredibly taxing to play this hard all the time. It is amazing they kept this up for most of the season. I also think that because they play this hard most of the time, they may end up with more than their fair share of little nagging injuries that they have to play through - at least in theory.

A better start would be appreciated tonight, and I think we will see that.

Yeah Weegar and particularly Andersson don't look right.
Rasmus is having a hard time getting around out there. His mobility looks really hampered.
Dude is all heart though.

Yeah Rasmus looks way way off. Interested to see exactly what he's been dealing with after the season is over. He's usually aggressive and an instigator out there, now he seems like he's really being held back by something. Some sort of mid-body injury?

Well, having a team wreck their own franchise record and needing it to make up their deficit is hard when the Flames have also had a very good stretch themselves. Two more losses by St. Louis over that 12 game stretch and we would be talking about how likely it would be that the flames make the playoffs .

If the focus is on CGY making the playoffs, you cheer for the Oilers to beat the Blues tonight.
If the Blues lose tonight, they can max out at 97 points. They will only have 2 games left.
Flames as of right now max out at 97 points.
STL currently has tiebreaker, but depending on how results go to end season, that tiebreaker could flip to CGY(unlikely, but possible).
If EDM loses, yeah, they're still stuck at 93, but will still have 4 games left and it feels pretty unlikely they're gonna lose 5 of those 8 possible points to end the season to get below 97.
If the focus is on hating the Oilers because they're the Oilers, then GO BLUES GO

Sure this is all logical, but I'm rooting for the scenario where the Oilers don't win again this season and miss the playoffs, because I think that would be hillarious, whether the Flames make it or not.
