Two ways to look at it.

Given the fearmongering of the 2004 election, that headline could be construed as an attempt at scaring voters in the GTA and Ontario away from the Conservatives, or soft NDP voters into the Liberal camp.

Or...

I was driving home after the game tonight, and QR77 was interviewing some political professor from the UofA, and he mentioned that the Star actually had the data four days ago, but deliberately held onto it until the day after the debate. He argued that the candidate that wins the debate is not usually determined by what is said, but rather by who gets the best media coverage afterward. He suggested that the Star might have actually been trying to use the poll to paint Harper as the winner of the debate, in what amounts to a pro-CPC conspiracy.

Ya, see both of those theories make perfect sense. The only problem is that if you read the star everyday (I do because we get it for free at Queen's) they are true big "L" Liberals. Which is why I am suspect, especiallly after hearing that they had this for four days.

I agree with you that part of the recent surge in CPC support voters are growing more comfortable with the idea of a Conservative minority (myself included) but many don't want to see a Harper-led majority. I think you're delving into tin-foil hat territory if you think reporting this news is some kind of attempt to hurt the CPC.
I agree with this completely.

Also Jimmy, if that article is an attempt to scare people away from the Cons, what about the Sun articles which are saying similar things? Is the Sun trying to scare people away from them too?

Once again, I'm not commplaing about the story, just the headline. Maybe I am being overly critical.

I live out here and I see and hear how people have reacted to that headline. The numbers are simply not there (as a poster above points out) for anyone to form a majority, so why mislead the readers to thinking that that outcome is possible?

Thats all I'm saying.

The Sun is never subtle.. they're the journalistic equivalent of a slice of lemon wrapped around a gold brick.

I made a bet the Liberals would win another minority, and I think I'll stick with it.

the article stated that the CPC was on their way, not thgat they already had the numbers. They are well on their way, only 1% less than the numbers Chretian pulled for his majority. They are gaining 4-6% per week, especially in Ontario, which is vital in this election. They have a 10% lead over the Liberals in popular vote. The same view was expressed by the Toronto Sun, which is as blue as possible.

Look at the regional breakdowns. The conservatives aren't going to come close to a majority until they can win seats in Quebec. All signs indicate that that wont happen this election. The Liberals may be doing poorly but they aren't about to blow up, they'll still get alot of seats in Ontario and Atlantic.
