Gretzky probably hasn't viewed himself as a Canadian in a long time. His wife is American, his kids are American, and he has lived in the U.S. for more than half his life. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 2009 and still hasn't picked it up. They have four ceremonies a year, so he has had at least 60 opportunities to fit it in, but he can't be bothered. Every living able bodied person who has ever been given the award has at least shown up to accept it.
Anyway, never liked the guy and he was never someone I cared for representing Canada.

He is someone who has lived a life of luxury in the USA for the past 35 years. He is an American citizen who has a tangential attachment to Canada because he played a sport at an elite level at one point in time. The fact that he hasn't come out with any measure of a response to the proposed annexation of Canada or the supposed joke about being a governor shows everything about his loyalty to a felon.
The fact that someone who is obscenely wealthy is out of touch with commoners and is beholden to their own material wealth isn't shocking. The fact is that we shouldn't put people on a pedal stool because they are good at a sport.

Obviously 'honourary captain' is a nothingburger title, but did he even know why he was there or which team he was representing? Team USA might as well have had two honourary captains.
