If he doesn't sign they better damn well trade him and Bo and start something new. I swear to god if they try to make a playoff run with them and then see if they'll sign after the season...

They aren't getting much for those two in a trade at this point, and it certainly isn't likely that they'll trade away a projected ~9+ WAR for a handful of lottery tickets, especially since there isn't anything left on the FA market to viably replace either of them anymore.

Sounds like Vlad is hitting the open market. What a disaster. They must deal him. Sooner the better.

The four-time All-Star said he and the Blue Jays were never close in negotiations, per Matheson.

This is what happens when you limp along with a managment group 3 years past their expiry date. Really seemed like this was a team on an upward swing with some home grown budding stars to root for and its amazing how fast that has slipped away like sand through your hands.

Yep, Jays can not afford to lose him for nothing.

I would hope he is traded, as soon as possible

To be honest I don’t fault them for not wanting to pay half a billion dollars for him. Make no mistake, some team will. But it doesn’t have to be their mistake. Their mistake was not locking him up previously.

He’s only 25, he’s good, and wants to stay in Toronto.

If you overpay, you overpay. But eventually you gotta do something. No idea what this teams plan is. Just limp along and hope for the best I guess?

Vladdy says when he hits free agency he wants to play for a winning team, to win a World Series.

The Jays really have no choice but to deal him asap. They can’t compete with that.

Going to be a ton of empty seats this season if/when that happens.

Not sure how the organization is supposed to be taken seriously when on one hand they were supposedly legitimately in on Otani and Soto, and on the other they can't close a deal with the next biggest thing in free agency, even with an exclusive negotiating window.

Oh well. Get what you can for Vladdy and Bichette I guess, and continue to be used to drive prices up in the free agency market.

Wouldn’t be surprised if that “used to drive up prices” stops too. If the Jays don’t have their own foundation of stars in Vladdy and Bo, there isn’t much reason to add to them.

Sad, but I almost expect them to go into the previous Cleveland model - draft and trade away just as they get value. It’s what they know.

To me it screams that the organization and probably Rogers itself doesn't see the value in overpaying for Vladdy.

This is one of those "when you're too close to the player you see his flaws more than his strengths" scenarios that tends to bite teams.

Soto has similar flaws to Vlad at times, but since you haven't watched him everyday for the last 5 years it's easier to overlook those flaws.

Now the Jays are going to lose the only player they had that even closely resembled a superstar and get lower value in a trade much like the Padres did for Soto.

I've said for a while the Jays of the Vladdy and Bo era really reminded me of the Flames of the Gaudreau and Monahan era. And it appears to be the same outcome.

Flames didn't prioritize signing Gaudreau prior to the 21-22 season because of a couple of poor seasons before he approached UFA, and then it burned them even when they were willing to pay up.

Looks to be the same with Vladdy.

Jays can't hold on now though - he needs to be moved ASAP

could be a negotiation tactic. what is close? is he going to say 5 million is close 50 million close?

Jays could still revisit and up their price. Mid season you offer him slightly more than what he asked? Depends on the ill will.

I am not optimistic though he is done. I am mad. He is my guy.

They won’t trade him unless they are way out of it by the all star break . They will just let him walk for the compensation pick

I so badly want the next piece of Blue Jays news to read that Atkins and Shapiro are fired.

Vlad’s body language was pissed at the presser. From the sounds of it they weren’t close.

I do still think too, there is time to get a deal done. It was self imposed deadline. If they come back with a deal you think he’ll say no dice? Doubtful. Give it a few weeks I bet they’ll come crawling back to him. Anyway, if they truly are far in their offers I hope they deal him. It would be a sizeable return and could set the future up nicely.

My guess, Vladdy has closed the window and will walk at the end of the season.
