I’d let him clear waivers and then see what STL would pay to dump the cap.

I suspect Mantha will return next year. Honestly, I don't know if scoring would be an issue if he'd have stayed healthy.

Are the Flames really still pursuing that strategy? It would cost the owners around $4 million (his contract was backloaded). What are you actually getting back for Saad at this point, who would be another year older and likely worse by then? He'd also be blocking another development spot for a year.
Look at what's going on with Kuzmenko and Barrie. The whole strategy is generally not that great. Particularly when you're dealing with guys who would be 33 years old.

St. Louis can buy him out for $2.1 and $1.2 million hit over the next two years.

How much are you going to pay a guy his age with his track record coming off knee surgery? Certainly not as much as this last contract.
Saad might be a way to add a player without giving up a pick that can help this year but be able to move next year.
He might be absolute trash too....I don't know his current statistical profile.

I had the same thought. I wonder if trying to dump the cap is a precursor to another move.
How much of his cap hit still applies if we was sent down to the AHL?

Can't see the Flames helping out a team 2 spots back.

That 4.5 million cap hit next year makes me think he won't get claimed.
As far as the Flames are concerned, we REALLY don't need another left shooting winger...

Every time someone hits waivers there is the claim crowd. Seriously, the last the thing the Flames need is a vet underperforming winger.

I am usually against 90% of the waiver names, but I am able to look at each one individually and consider whether I think it might make sense. Call me crazy.
Here's the thing... Saad is a better player than what normally shows up on the waiver wire. The reason he's there is that he makes $4.5M and he isn't providing value for that price. But the Flames have $20M in cap space - it is a complete non-issue for them. And since the value of cap space has declined, this is a way they can utilize some of that space: pick up a guy for free, give him some ice-time, and then trade him at 50% retained.

How is he only 32? Feels like he's been around long enough to be 42.

And if he does not work out and blocks a roster spot from one of our young players then what? Is getting a 3rd or a 4th at best for a guy worth blocking one of your young players?

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Wait for him to clear, trade them Kuzmenko for Saad and their 2026 3rd
Profit?

Different posters like different players on different teams, so I don't see the big deal.
That's what you sound like every time a player hits waivers, or if someone says Huska is a good coach:

One year, sure I guess, even then he hasn't looked very good whenever I've watched the Blues.
2 years? Nah, pass.
