I think he would be an upgrade on Rooney. I also don't see any Cs on the farm he's going to block... Morton isn't ready, and Bishop is a career AHLer IMO.

Finally, I always thought he did well centering lines with kids while an the Flames. The PK need, and Ryan's 55%FO make him a no brainer as the depth C Conroy has been looking for.

NHL Edge has him at about the 20th percentile in the league for top speed. Too slow.

Ugh...you know I'm torn. On one hand...Oilers stench, also...we should be blooding kids this season but...we suck at faceoffs so...

He's also cheap like borscht and on an expiring contract.

I dont know. I dont like always wanting waiver-fodder but I could see it.

Ultimately though? It seems like he'd be taking a spot away from a prospect just to win face-offs and I'm not sure thats worth it.

What's the worst case scenario of putting in a claim and waiving Barrie, or Rooney? If he doesn't workout, then we put him back on waivers. If he helps our 29th ranked PK, our 29th ranked FO%, and shores up the 4th line then it's a significant upgrade.

I realize the Doc is much slower now, but he's still pretty good defensively. I also really want the Flames to play anyone but Rooney as the 4th line C at this point.

Also we can always put Ryan on waivers when Zary is back so we can give Kerins a try as the 4th C

I think Ryan would be an improvement on Rooney - don't care about the stats, he's a smarter player. And he is a right shot C, and a better PKer, two things the Flames need.

And no, he isn't taking the place of a young player - the Flames don't have any candidates for that role (which is why Rooney is still there)

Here we fn go. Every time a player hits waivers people are clamoring to claim them no matter what. We don't need Derek Ryan. If Kerins continues to play well when Zary comes back we might have to scratch Rooney who is already Derek Ryan.

Relax. We're not talking about a long-term investment. Our centre depth is atrocious so this would allow us to not have to put Rooney into the lineup every game.

If Ryan can’t beat out Rooney for a spot, oh well. That’s what waivers are for. If he clears, he can help a depleted Wranglers team.

What depleted Wranglers team? Their roster is just fine, what young player are you benching for Derek Ryan? There are guys on the Wranglers I would rather see get a shot than Derek Ryan. So you are going to switch out Rooney for Ryan every so often? Wtf would be the point of that? It's shuffling deck chairs while taking up a roster spot. No.

The same Wranglers team that’s missing Pelletier, Kerins, Duehr (who could be sent down to free up a spot), Kirkland, and recently called up ECHL filler to ice 11F and 7D?

Is Ryan old and slow? Sure! Is he a free upgrade on Rooney? Absolutely.

IMO the 4th line has been hurting the team ever since Kirkland went down.
Lomberg - Rooney - Duehr has an xG% of 32.6%, CF% of 35.2%, and are a -5 in 70mins.
We need a better 4th line, and Rooney is the obvious choice for an upgrade.
Lomberg - Rooney - Pelletier had a 0%xG against WPG, with an xGF of 0 and xGA of 0.51.

Our PK is 29th with a 71.3% kill rate. It's down from 9th and 80.8% last year. A lot of that has to do with the Flames often starting the PK without the puck.

Our Faceoffs coincidentally are again 29th at 45.2FOW%, down from 49.6% last year.

Center options:
Zary is out indefinitely.
Kirkland is done for the season.
Morton looks pretty average in the AHL this season.
Bishop is a career AHLer.
Schwindt got claimed by VGK before the season started.
Pospisil could be an option, so can Kerins, and Sharangovich but they have better roles in the top 9 ATM, at least until Zary's back.

So how would you improve our 4th line without spending assets?

This is probably the beginning of the end of Derek Ryan’s career. Pretty cool story though. Made NHL at 29 after playing university hockey and then in Europe. Just passed 600 NHL games too.

I actually lived with him in my dorm at U of A while he played for the Bears so got to know him a little. Really cool to see what he did with himself.
