Karlosson won the Norris with 101 points and being a -26. The point total is impressive but as a defenceman your #1 job is to keep pucks outs, and get pucks up ice.
Yeah that was a joke he didnt even play the position beyond faceoff alignment
in all seriousness, I'd be all for it. There's a Selke Trophy for forwards, after all. Norris Trophy has felt like a pure "defenseman who can put up great offensive numbers" award for a long, long time ... might as well honour those who put their bodies on the line as well.
I’m not sure the Selke goes to the best defensive forward. It seems to go to a 30 goal scorer from the Eastern Conference who sometimes kills penalties.

The Hockey News was calling for a defensive defenceman award when Langway was still in the NHL. The league has been ignoring these calls for 40 years, can't see why they would change their minds now.
I think the biggest problem is that actually analysing the defensive contributions of individual skaters is complicated, time-consuming, and requires a deep knowledge of the game and a lot of hairy statistics. Try explaining that stuff to the average media person, and eyes will glaze over in a hurry.
The award, if honest, would be dismissed as a trophy for ‘Geeky Stuff We Don't Care About (And Don't Think the Fans Should Care Either, Because We Are the Real Experts, Doggone It)’, and if dishonest, would be just another Norris or Selke given on offensive stats and reputation.

He has a right to be bitter, in his prime he would've won this a couple times, and Hjalmarsson would've been strong competition. No one thinks about or mentions these guys, they aren't properly recognized.
On second thought, the mainstream NHL pundit has a skewed idea of what a good defensive defenseman is and they might reward bad defenders who just block a ton of shots.

I love tanev....but there is a lot of good defensive defenceman.
One of my favourite all-time players...#28 in your programs, #1 in your Hearts...Robyn Regeeeeeeehrrrr!!!
I loved the way he played.
"The puck is going into the corner....you want it...dont you? I can see you looking at it...go ahead....touch it...I dare you. Because you see, that is not merely a puck. That is 'My Precious.' And that? Thats not merely some corner of a hockey rink...that is...THE TUNNEL OF DEATH!!! Admission for ONE!!!"

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
There should be an award for this. Thanks AC! I could watch this on repeat.
It still baffles me that Hemsky kept doing it. I know you have to play the game but my God man...adapt a little! If you go into that corner Regehr is going to murder you.
You know it. I know it. Regehr sure as hell knows it. 19,000+ fans know it. Why do you persist? Perhaps an alternative strategy may be in order?

Wouldn't happen but I'd offer up Vlad Konstantinov as contender for the trophy name...
And certainly yes to Johnny as the new name for Lady Bying...a connection:
"Konstantinov earned the NHL Plus/Minus Award in 1995–96, with a plus/minus difference of +60. The +60 was the highest rating a player achieved since Wayne Gretzky finished with a +70 in the 1986–87 season; it wouldn't be matched or surpassed until Johnny Gaudreau registered a +64 in the 2021-22 season."
Leave the Norris as is. I like keeping that history alive. Trophies shouldn't be renamed.
Introduce a new trophy and call it the Bobby Orr. Akin to the Art Ross - it automatically goes to the highest scoring d-man. The Norris then naturally becomes the defensive defenseman award.
I should work at the NHL.

Makes sense to have a defensive defenseman award, but I don't know if journalists would be particularly good at identifying them - might make sense to have the players vote on it like with the Ted Lindsay, since I feel like they would actually have a better idea of who is tough to play against.
Bobby Orr trophy for the highest scoring defensemen also makes sense.
