I've come to realize that stalking is form of mental illness; it's not just "omg I love this person so much". It's completely irrational behavior, borderline scary for the victim.

I don’t want this to turn into a conversation about the legal system, but it’s wild to me how often the focus is on the easiest lever to pull and punishing the symptoms instead of addressing the the cause.
Every restraining order should come with court-mandated mental health intervention. I’m aware the systems in place don’t support this and there’s many different situations where this would/should also be applicable. But still. It’s scary that these people can just continue their behaviour without the cause being addressed.

Her X profile is private, but her LinkedIn is not. Someone posted her LIP to X in response to "is she hot?", and man do I feel bad for her. Ridin' on the ol' struggle bus for sure.

Saw it happen with a guy in my friend group from high school when he became the stalker. After high school I moved away and came back after a couple of years, and he was a totally different person. He became completely obsessed with a girl that we were both always friends with growing up. He would show up at her home and work all the time, leave notes on her car, spent all his money on gifts for her and things for himself that he thought would impress her. He even bought an engagement ring and proposed to her. She was begging him to stop and didn't accept the gifts or lead him on. It really did just come out of nowhere it seemed. Eventually his parents intervened and he was diagnosed and medicated. Apparently he had other delusions going on that he kept to himself, so he was probably fortunate he got help when he did.

Similar thing happened to one of my friends, his girlfriend broke up with and he just did not take it well and started doing similar things.
The major problem was...we were all young. We're like 20. This kind of thing hasn't happened before to a friend, we're not equipped to solve this. Mentally or emotionally.
So at the end of the day we went to his parents and told them:
"You've got to put an end to this, one way or another, either you talk to him or get him help or he's going to end up in jail."
To which the response was: "You're just kids yourselves, what do you know?"
Yeah. Thats the whole point. We're essentially kids at the time, you need to find someone who knows what they're doing. We can't stop this, he cant stop this, you cant stop this...but if someone doesnt, the next step is Cops. We understand that you think we're young idiot children who don't know anything, but thats why we're coming to you, if you dont get someone to put a stop to this....the result is bad news.
Relationships are hard.
In this particular case with Debrusk? I dont think he even had a relationship with this girl? I dont know, I might be wrong. But one thing the human psyche is ill-equipped to deal with is randomness. Humanity likes to believe that there is an order to things, and sometimes there just isnt.
Our brains dont handle it well and our Justice System is not well designed to deal with it.
Its difficult.

A Stefan Edberg obsession from someone in Calgary. Never thought I would hear that.

That's a disappointing reaction from the parents. How would he react if your friend group tried to talk to him about it? Did your friend turn out ok in the end?
I would doubt that Debrusk has had any relationship with her. She's a mousy girl and uses language that I interpret as developmental delay. Probably harmless to anyone other than herself, which is part of why I find this story heartbreaking.
There's a link in that reddit thread that reminds everyone this is how Tyler Seguin's wife initiated their relationship, but because she's a hot blonde it worked. I've definitely heard other not-so-high profile stories of women doing stalkerish behaviour and other concerning manipulation in order to "shoot their shot", so maybe this isn't all that uncommon.

I didn't know that story. It's pretty weird but I guess there is a nuance between pursuing someone hard and tricking them into meeting you, and stalking someone who wants nothing to do with you. It sounds like stalker behaviour, but I guess he didn't mind.
One of the members from ABBA married her stalker as well.

Yeah it all ended up fine, he was eventually talked down.
The thing is when you're 20 every little setback seems like the end of the world, like that was the only girl for him for the rest of his days, but life does go on.
I think the concern was more..."this has to stop before either someone gets hurt or there is Legal action that you cant walk away from."

Well, you're wrong about that. This does tend to confuse the older populations so I don't blame you on it.
The difference
Well I don't know about thoughts and prayers but this doesn't seem like a funny issue for Debrusk or his family. This woman seems legitimately unhinged and dangerous. This woman has created a world in her mind centred around her and Debrusk being together. From some of her previous tweets it seems like their only actual connection is Jake making eye contract with her during a pregame warm up.

And to bring back to this: sports. Sports is a huge industry powered by parasocial behaviour. And heck, sports may be the original parasocial industry too. We can see records from back in antiquity of people with parasocial relationships with their favourite chariot racers.

Never stalked anyone but I can kinda see it if you weren't in the right head space...you watch these athletes daily, hear them in the media, follow their careers and lives. It almost seems like you know them personally.
