If Flames make playoffs, Wolf should win the Calder.
But he won't - it'll be Celebrini for helping the Sharks to a 32nd place finish.

agree.
otoh for Kerins/Pelletier getting right back at it is probably a pretty good thing,
otherwise a trap/let down game likely. trap probably the wrong word- scheduled loss as some say?

Playing back to back with Vladar in net and against a team that needs to beat the Flames to keep their playoff hopes alive, this will be a tough one to win. Kerins will likely not be playing with quite the same adrenaline rush this game, so someone else will have to step up on offence to keep the wins coming.

I would 100% start Wolf again.
He gives you the best chance to win, and he has played back to back's regularly with the Wranglers as a pro.

I don't think that is wise. Play Vladar tonight and Wolf on Thursday.
You don't need to overtax Wolf in the middle of the season.

Tonight being the back to back is kind of annoying by NHL schedulers to be honest.
If you're going to do two games in a city like this wouldn't it make more sense for the Flames to have today off and then do it as both teams having a back to back on Wednesday and Thursday.
Not impacted by any team schedule, nothing booked at Enterprise Center, just giving one team an advantage in a conference match up for no reason

I also like Eastern Time Zone games because they start at a nice time.
Anyhow....bad news St. Louis....the Flames are in town!

And Vladar hasn't played in almost two weeks. It's time to give him a start.

I know he won't start, I just think the reasoning is silly.
He has played 23 of 42 games, and is 23 years old. I don't buy the notion that a professional athlete can't play back to back games as a goaltender, or handle an extremely heavy workload.

Then you fall into the trap that Sutter had with Kipper: you always have the best chance of winning by starting the #1, but that results in him playing every night.
A case can be made that they should have played Vladar last night, so that they could play Wolf in both STL games, which are more important.
But they got the W, and we move on.

Yeah...start Vader.
Wolf already got you the points you wanted. Thus far I dont feel I have a right to complain about the usage of goaltenders this season.
I dont feel that I can point to something I'd consider an egregious mistake concerning the usage of the goaltenders.
I think we should remember, this is Wolf's first NHL season and I think they're easing him into it quite masterfully.

This strategy led to Kipper playing 70 plus games because anytime we put in a backup the team couldn't function.

I am not suggesting a 75 game starter here, I just think it's funny how the game has transitioned to all but guaranteeing the backup goaltender gets a start in a back to back scenario.
I think load management should be considered over the course of a full season, but I also think there should be a time and place where your best players need to be in the lineup.
We could really put St. Louis out of contention in the next handful of days, and I think Wolf gives us the greatest chance of doing so with his play as of late.

Exactly, could not agree more. Goalies like Kipper, Brodeur amongst many others played 70+ games, lots of back to backs and didn't fatigue in playoffs. NBA load management comes to mind also after players played 82 games...
What is different now? Serious questions, if anything they have more rest in schedules now, games ( NBA and NHL ) are less physical, better conditioned players these days, more spread out dates in nhl/nba finals and so on.
I dont get it

Now, these games are a chance for the Flames to effectively bury STL. Amazing.
In all likelihood though, it will end up being a split. It would be disappointing, after this 3 game winning streak, to lose both to the Blues.
|
I think it’ll be a split as well. Betting we lose this one. Hopefully the team shows up for Vladar and gives him some run support.
If they somehow manage to win both it’ll become a race between the flames and canucks for the last wildcard spot would be my guess.

What's different is that goalies don't win cups playing 70 plus games.
If they get injured in the playoffs you are tossing in a goalie who played 10 games.
