Brutal for Columbus, surely with a little patience someone would have offered up a 1st and a decent NHL player for him. the fans in Columbus deserve better.

Lots said the same thing when Chicago moved Dach, but Dach seems to have stalled and Chicago ended up with Frank Nazar, who is having a very good 1st year in the AHL. 43-43-86 pace based on 72 games.

Really depends on how Jiricek and Dach turn out.

According to Elliote, the 1st is top-5 protected (very unlikely) and will revert to a 2026 1st if it is.

Jiricek is just not very good right now. I don't think anyone was offering up much. Canucks are absolutely desperate for any sort of help right from a RHD right now and apparently wouldn't add anything outside of magic beans.

I actually think Minnesota gave up too much.

Sounds like the type of deal we’ll eventually get for Rasmus, if lucky.

Surprised the Blue Jackets cut him loose for this.

I think people are overrating Jiricek, he hasn't been very good. Yes he's still young and a top 10 pick, but that was a pretty weak draft year .

They severely mucked up his development over the past few years. He looks worse now than he did his draft year. He's going to need a lot of work to get him on track. It wasn't happening with the Blue Jackets organization.

If he ends up as a 2nd pairing guy and no longer improves his game, it'll be a fair trade. If one believes that a 21 year old defenceman with 53 games played so far across 3 seasons still has runway to realize his potential, and he does somehow over his next 160 games, it'll be a really good move.

That’s quite a haul of picks for Columbus. Not a horrible return for a guy who has yet to show he is top pairing quality.

I don't know why people are trashing Columbus. That's a pretty good haul for a 21 year old AHL player / fringe NHLer.

I used to like him as a prospect, but he hasn't been good, has attitude issues, and has shown very limited progression. The Jackets are one of my local teams, so I've followed him pretty closely.

I think it could work out for both teams. Like the jackets restocking their picks with a player they couldn't get going and minny is hoping that they can untap the potential and that the environment can reignite jiricek.

I look at this and wish the Flames would have traded Bennett for a return like this after 3 years than hold onto him and mess up his development to the point they got a lesser return and years of frustration. Jiricek is from the old regime, and probably better to take this and move forward than fail over and over trying to fix him. They might give up the best player in the deal. Sometimes the change is good for these younger players.

Bennett is an interesting comp. Which how they ended up using him, an earlier trade with a much higher return would have been better. This guy has a long way to go to be as valuable as Bennett is now too.

Pretty good deal for both sides, IMO.

If he finds his game (MANY defensemen take.time) Minny is.set. For CBJ, they get a few picks to try and replace him.

Pronman's take in the Athletic:
Quote:
This is a poor return on investment for Columbus after investing the 2022 No. 6 pick in Jiricek. However, the fact the player wanted out likely hurt his value, combined with the fact some NHL personnel have soured on the player due to his inconsistent play as a pro plus the fact he’s seemed to rub his team the wrong way through the process. The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline believes it mostly came down to Jiricek’s skating concerns. In that way, it resembles in part the rationale for why Washington traded then-top prospect Filip Forsberg in 2013, which aged poorly.

Love this deal for both sides.

Minnesota is thinks they can turn Jiricek around - maybe he was a bad fit in Columbus, or perhaps he will continue disappointing. That's the risk here, and that's why Columbus couldn't get equal value of his draft pedigree.

Columbus can either have more ammo for their continuing rebuild, or they can turn around and use some/all of these assets (or even add to it) and trade for a young cornerstone piece themselves.

Good move for both teams. With how long Jiricek has been on the market for, you have to assume that this was the highest offer.

Edit: Maybe they use those assets as a package for Andersson? Wouldn't that be funny.
