I guess this is a sign folks are happy with the rebuild so far. 4 games in and we're talking about signing McDavid.

This roster with McDavid is better than the concensus cup fav Oilers...with cap to spare!

Can't judge a book by its cover, I suppose.

I was sure this was going to be a thread about abandoning the tank and holding some of our trade chips past the trade deadline by the title.

No way he'd sign in Calgary, it would be way too close for one of his former mouth breathing fanatics to drive down in their GMC van (with curtains) and set fire wherever he decided to take shelter in Calgary.

This is an interesting exercise, because the simple fact is that the Flames have $18M in cap space, and could sign him without removing any players

Zary - McDavid - Mantha
Huberdeau - Pospisil - Kuzmenko
Sharangovich - Kadri - Coronato
Lomberg - Backlund - Coleman

That forward group can easily win a cup, and is better than the one up north.

Also, we have a better and deeper D core.

And we have a ton of young prospects to continue to insert into the lineup, turning some of these guys over, creating cap space to acquire more key additions.

I think McDavid is worth a max deal, and I think a well-managed team WILL win a cup with McDavid on a max deal. They key is a team has to be well-managed.

Oilers have been a poorly managed team. That's why I would love for them to re-sign McDavid. I don't think they can win WITH him, as they really need to turn their scouting around. Freeing up Nurse's deal will be difficult and will further set them back in terms of assets. They are missing draft picks, and they aren't hitting on enough of their draft picks when they do use them in the draft. They are the oldest team in the NHL.

Please re-sign McDavid, and continue in mediocrity. Last year - and maybe this year - was their best shots at it. It becomes harder with Draisaitl earning more, Bouchard is going to get more. Nurse... and then it drops off. My wish is for the Oilers to re-sign him.

I would also love for the Flames to sign McDavid if he ever becomes available. I would be comfortable with a max term on him. If the Flames have shown anything in the last 10 or 15 years, it is that they are unwilling to tank to get a high pick. They have also shown a remarkable ability to draft players and build a solid team. Flames are always loaded with depth. It is the high-end game-breakers that they have trouble with. Gaudreau was one, Tkachuk was another, and they needed another one or two really skilled guys to finish off that team, but never really got them. Monahan and his injuries, Bennett's misuse and poor development (arguably, at least by me).

I think McDavid is going to re-sign in Edmonton anyway. If I am Draisaitl, before I re-sign, I want to know if McDavid intends to re-sign. That's my expectation now anyway. If McDavid does leave, I bet he screws up and goes to another team with poor depth and cap management - Toronto. I don't think Toronto has been a well-managed team, and I think it has become worse under Treliving there (not to take a shot at him, but I do see their cap situation worse now).

It is definitely one of the more fascinating stories to follow for next season and beyond. If I am Conroy, I would definitely offer McDavid a max deal, but I think he gets traded. It was difficult to trade Draisaitl away coming off of a SCF's appearance. I don't think the Oilers will make much noise this spring (knock on wood that holds true). They will have to extend McDavid, or they will trade him. You can't enter the season with McDavid holding all the cards and walking away for free. My money is that they re-sign him, but if he ends up walking for free the year after, I would want Conroy to put in a max offer. I think he is worth it.
