So that's it though right?

I wouldn't do it, but I guess I don't see it as big of deal that some are suggesting unless I'm missing something (reasons I outlined are enough to now do it, or at very least have it caught by editors).

Characterizing it as Gaudreau “helping” them is where it crosses the line from bringing up an obvious reason why they will be worse this season and stupidity

It's how he said it. "Help from Gaudreau".

Really really really really poor judgement.

I mean how hard would it have been to just say the loss of Gaudreau is going to hurt them in the standings?

The more I listen to Seravelli, the less I end up enjoying it. He seems to be a guy that is more concerned with getting views, period, and I guess that's his job after all. Personally I just choose not to reward personalities over substance with clicks in a clickbait world.

When you combine it with his previous point that the Lady Bing should be renamed for Gaudreau, it definitely stands out as a lot more as him watching over the lottery or something from above. Especially with "in heaven" having no clue if that was re-edited by him or the tweeter.

Either way I think it's still a weird thing to say. Especially knowing that losing their best player is obviously a large part in why they will be a lottery contender. Just, you know, have someone else read your article before posting maybe? Isn't there an editor?

It's implying that Gaudreaus death is beneficial to the Blue Jackets. I'm sure everyone in that organization would disagree, even if they win the lottery.

There are ways to word this, and he chose the worst way possible.

I don't see that at all.

It's a ham handed way of trying to say something sweet about Gaudreau in heaven doing something for his hockey team.

Nothing in what he said suggests the Jackets are better off with his death.

I think Seravalli deserves criticism for the wording, but it's pretty clear to me that he meant it in a way of the lottery balls falling in their favour. Not that the Blue Jackets will win the lottery because of Gaudreau's passing.

I doubt the Daily Faceoff has an editor who reviews every article.

Is it really surprising that sites we all use for free lack professional oversight and rigorous standards? Where’s the money to pay editors supposed to come from?

Yes, especially in the blog world where they likely never existed in the first place.

That's exactly how I read it - and I'd comfortably say that is what Frank intended as well, and people who read it the other way just baffle me.

I guess my thing is that he didn’t even need to make reference to Johnny in that way at all. If he wanted to honour Gaudreau’s legacy, there are far better ways to do so than to associate his death with his former team’s draft fortunes in any way, intended or not.

I think you’re being very kind with your interpretation of FS’s intentions and perhaps you’re right. I agree that it’s important to give people the benefit of the doubt. But the way he made the comment does read very poorly.

Yeah he could have left his Gaudreau nod with his point about the trophy and just said "with any luck, Columbus could win...." etc..

Again, just have 2 other people read your thing before putting it out.

Johnny is sacred

It’s not something you bring up unless it’s for Johnny family directly.

Weird a professional would lack such awareness

granted, I'm not a native speaker - but when I first read the sentence, it sounded more like "his death will help them be terrible and draft 1st overall", which sounds infinitely worse than "he'll look down on them and help them out". I don't think Seravalli had nefarious intentions here, but the wording is very unfortunate.

That's how I first read it. His death will make them worse and therefore they'll win the lottery.

This is likely how he meant it. After reading it a couple times, I can see my initial interpretation was wrong.
However a lot of people read it the first way, so it's clearly very poorly worded. Espescially before his re edit.

I like how Frank thought those edits would make it any better. Just tasteless

People who blog from their mom's basement don't have editors.
