Pelletier can play his way off this team. I don't want to use the pre-season as a way to determine if he's 'ready or not'. Some players need to get through X number of games before they get warm. He's also on a rebuilding team so I'm not in favor of casting him aside, especially with Mantha and Kuzmenko likely gone after this year.
Wouldn't the cap floor become a factor without a few of these vets? I assumed Mantha was signed to get to the floor and then dump at the deadline. I am not aware of wha the floor is and how close the Flames are to it but I would imagine it is pretty close.
I don't think Solo is on many team's radars at all, and they have their own Solos they need to manage and get through waivers. The idea that someone urgently needs his talents enough to keep him on their NHL roster to start the year is highly unlikely. We go through this every year and everyone always frets about prospects being claimed on waivers. There's probably a higher likelihood of Hanley being claimed due to his amount of experience in the NHL (still very unlikely).
I'm not flustered if it happens. The fact is that guys like Solovyov may not even be on the team in a year or two even if he makes it. We still have Weegar, probably for the length of his contract. Parekh, Brusztewicz and Grushnikov are all likely to be on the team within a couple years, likely higher in the lineup than Solo, so there's your top 4 projected. This doesn't consider any other prospects like Poirier, Morin, Mews, Kuznetsove etc. who may end being much better than what Solo is now. Solovyov is not going to be more than a bottom pairing guy, and a relatively replaceable one at that. That's coming from someone who likes his overall game, but I'm not blown away by him, and it's likely he'll be another Adam Pardy like journeyman at best.
I don't disagree with what you are saying and maybe even that there would be a higher chance of a Hanley claim than a Solovyov claim, but I guess just where this team is at in our cycle I know which one I'd rather retain. even if the view is at best he's a Pardy, for Hanley at best he's a Pardy with his best years behind him I think? dunno
While I believe in Conroy.. it is kind of unsettling that a rebuilding team can't make space for former first round picks. This shouldn't be an issue.
Guys like Coleman, Kuzmenko, Mantha should be on their way out this season.
Same goes with the defense.
You can't just trade them away for anything. It's not that simple.
Other teams are probably facing the same issues as us, I can't see many teams waiving a 1st rd pick to take on a player we don't want.
This really isn't negative or sending the wrong message at all. They can all be told you all made the team, and as soon as we create the spot you will be up. Go down and be great.
This isn't like past camps when we would cut the entire AHL team right away.
We just have to be patient, that is what a rebuild is all about patience.

Add in Barrie, Hanley.
Think there comes a point where you are over sheltering your prospects. I think there are a handful that aren’t going to keep developing minus NHL playing time.

Doubt the players care about what it’s classified as. If I was in a training camp where I outplayed someone who made the main club and my pay went from $950K to $95K I’d be telling my agent to keep his eye open for other opportunities.
I just dont see the downside to starting Pellitier with the big club. If he plays his way off the team so be it. If he shows he deserves to he in the lineup then he stays.
It's not like hes looked bad in this camp, but others have looked really good. I understand the others probably deserve a spot over him but they can also benefit from a lot of icetime on the farm.
Make his fate his own before he hits the waiver wire.
Think the downside is you lose credibility with the prospects when you tell them it’s an open tryout and then you keep an underperforming player due to contract status .

If that was the case we would have a bunch of teams with top prospects asking for trades.

What do you propose they do?
Waive Huberdeau? trade him?
Coleman? Waivers? trade?
Kuzmenko waive? trade?
Mantha who they signed for 1 year for the purpose of flipping, trade him before he plays a game for us?

Keeping Schwindt over Pelletier would make no sense on any level.
Keep Cooley for a little while, don’t sign Barrie. Although I doubt Cooley gets claimed so probably not necessary. I’d be happy with any of the group B guys as an 8th defenseman, don’t see a need to sign Barrie.
